Album Review: Fungi Girls- Old Foamy EP

Fungi Girls
Old Foamy EP
**and1/2 out of *****
The three piece lo-fi outfit from Forth Worth, TX have put out a short EP that showcases three great tunes, making for an excellent summer freak out. Recorded a few years ago and only now released the group, Jacob Bruce (guitar/vocals), Skylar Selinas (drums), Deryck Barrera (bass) work with a engaging combo of scuzzy no frills playing and catchy tunes that contain fiery moments.

The title track plays with a surf-rock pop ascetic. Lyrically the track is ladled with hefty helpings of ooh's and ah's. Underneath it all the tempo changes mix up as drums and bass push things faster or slow on their own whims. "Dark Times" swims in the same stream as the band ba-ba-ba's under a punk infusion before a mega guitar solo takes center stage.

The disk ends with "Party For Zeb" and the echo laden vocals stay at an arms length like fellow Texans The Black Angels. The garage rock feels natural and cleaning up the sound/production may yield better results or perhaps cause the sound to fall apart on itself, either way these three tunes on Old Foamy are a fun ride.
