The best album from a criminally underrated American band was released in October 1984.
The roots rock on Los Lobos debut is some of the most engaging Americana recorded. It sounds timeless like The Band, who were a clear inspiration, but also unique having their East L.A. and Mexican roots flowing through their sound.
Over the last few years RtBE's appreciation of the band has only grown, yet this is their defining album and the one we return to the most often.
All of the songs are great here, from the meaty '50's inspired roots rocker "Don't Worry Baby" to the gorgeous "Matter of Time", to the rippling "Serenata Norteña", to the sweet sax solo in "I Got Loaded" to the hip swinging "Evangeline" to the album closing title track.
No misses, just all hits from a band who had been doing it for sometime, but finally released a full length album and the rest is history.
So let's cut to the chase and listen to the dynamite album:
