Album Review: Guts Club - Please Come Back To The Farm

Guts Club
Please Come Back To The Farm
*** out of *****

The newest release from the New Orleans, LA based doom/experimental outfit Guts Club is a capturing of the quartet's haunting power and tone. Titled Please Come Back To The Farm, the four track record finds each song running long as the band's dense sound leads to crackling and distorted speakers.
Comprised of Lindsey Baker (guitar, vocals), L. Jett (baritone sax, synth), Abbey Byers (drums, bell), and Violet Jimenez (guitar), the quartet has been around for awhile now, however this is their first using of baritone sax in their music which adds an added layer of deep resonating sound. The record was recorded live by Nick Pope in their hometown as the group deals with a modern world that is becoming increasingly hostile to queer culture.

Opener "Curled Hooves" sets the lumbering tone as the slow crawl of sound is eerie as the track progresses over nine and a half minutes getting deep with the drums and feedback. "Remembering The Mountains" has a cool, cinematic intro and lyrics that tie the listener to returning home as the track is slow and grinding with a feedback laden finale.

That buzzing feedback starts "Brackish" as squawking sax and thudding drums slam forward methodically. The track increases tempo and recedes back before moving forward again to close. The band try on a cover to close with an artistic spin through George Michaels "Father Figure".

The track is the most adventurous from the band as the sax starts it before a free jazz freak out explodes. This pattern emerges as the lyrics get a few lines then the music spastically vibrates only to return to a few more lines before crashing again. A cool cover that Michaels would appreciate, or possibly run away screaming from.

The spectral tone and slow crawl of Guts Club comes through on Please Come Back To The Farm, dark music with a bit of a smirk in these troubled times.
