Album Review: Odom-Kunkel - Sniffing Spirits EP

Odom-Kunkel
Sniffing Spirits EP
***and1/2 out of *****

Guitarist Roger Kunkel and bassist Stoo Odom were members of the California based, late 80's/early 90's rock outfit Thin White Rope and now reunite to deliver an avant-garde collection of freeform outings as Odom-Kunkel. The four song EP Sniffing Spirits is playful, experimental and ominous.

The short EP starts with "The Sniffing Song" a humorous, jazzy ode, sung by Odom that describes a dog looking for a household member who is no longer around. Odom's stand up bass work bounces along wonderfully as Kunkel's guitar solos behind. The standout on Sniffing Spirits arrives next as the elongated "Smell" finds Kunkel taking the lead with vibrating guitar work that stretches out, walking deliberatly into the shimmering desert sun as Odom supports the crackling, searching guitar lines.

Odom returns to the microphone for the vampire blues of "You Gotta Feed" which floats along on deep bass and chunky riffs. The four song offering wraps with an unsettling outing into the unknown as the duo strap on and vibrate into the ether as creepy sounds, cosmic vibrations and dark vibes populate the haunting instrumental "Taste".

Odom-Kunkel successfully deliver a unique mix of improvised guitar and upright bass as the long time musical partners reunite with a sense of freedom on the out-there, yet still engaging, Sniffing Spirits.
