The Who
8/30/25 Madison Square Garden NYC
On a pleasant summer Saturday Night in New York City, rock and roll legends The Who played Madison Square Garden on their supposed farewell tour titled The Song Is Over. Before the band started up Pete Towshend stated that The Who had played MSG 36 times and that this would "probably" be the last time, so the door is still open to a return.
The night kicked off with a powerful rendition of "I Can't Explain" and the band was scaled down from the last time they played the garden with an orchestra. The more rock/greatest hits focused show went through the bands career for just over two hours. Banging rock numbers like "Substitute" and "The Seeker" sounded strong next to larger muscled up arena ready outings like "Who Are You" however the overall volume of the show was noticeably low throughout.
"Long Live Rock" was a rare breakout and "Love Ain't For Keepin'" was a nice surprise while all the cell phones came out for "Behind Blue Eyes" as Roger Daltry sounded in fine form. "Pinball Wizard > See Me, Feel Me" got a loud ovation, but nothing got as loud of a cheer as "Eminence Front" which NYC simply loves.
"My Generation" was jammed out winningly before the band focused on a few Quadrophenia tracks. The pumping "Real Me", "Love Reign O'er Me" and the acoustic/harmonica driven "I Am One" were all well played but none topped "5:15" which was delivered with real intensity. "Won't Get Fooled Again" and "Baba O'Reilly" were both the arena rockers they were written to be while a shortened version of "The Song Is Over" and "Tea and Theater" ended the show on sedated note.
The Who have been having health issues and ticket sale troubles on this trek through North America but if this is really the last tour from The Who, their playing on this stop in NYC was a solid way to go out.
