Album Review: My Neptune - Despina

My Neptune
Despina
***and1/2 out of *****

The debut EP, Despina, from the New Orleans, LA based My Neptune is a bittersweet slice of restrained dream-pop, as the quartet exhales around pensive tunes that vibrate, sway and swell.

The band consists of Kate Baxter- guitar + vocals, Steve Garofano- drums, Elizabeth Grubbs- piano, Erica Keller- bass, Caitlin Strokosch- cello, who work together on tunes that are never in a hurry or over the top, existing in a dream-like haze, just drifting along.

The opening "Nova" starts with just strings and Baxter's soft, breathy vocals before the tune effortlessly floats up into the dusky sky around piano, drums and cello. "Reframe The Walls" uses a melancholy groove, echoing vocals and a vibrating ending well, while "Decatur" does a wonderful job of capturing that exasperating moment at dawn when the body is in a transitive state between exhalation and hungover, using soft drums and bright piano.

A cello introduction kicks off "My Bed" which slowly builds with marching drums, recedes and builds again, but would benefit from a bit more over the top oomph when it reaches its climax. The EP closes with the longest and most experimental track here "End of the World". The song starts with a child's recorded voice and then screeches and pulses along for about five minutes, before kicking in with a woozy swaying that is blissfully sweet, as gorgeous piano leads things forward.

An intriguing debut offering from My Neptune who offer up cosmically contemplative excursions throughout Despina
