Happy 50th Anniversary to Bob Dylan and The Band's The Basements Tapes

Happy 50th Anniversary to Bob Dylan and The Band's The Basements Tapes

One of the great albums of both artists career, and the start of bootleg/outtakes albums that spawned a whole industry.

The history of this album is very cool, and if you aren't aware, you can check out a few sites to get up to speed. There is also not going to be any 50th Anniversary release from the artists as a few years ago the Bootleg Series #11 emptied the vault on these sessions.

Today though we celebrate the OG release that came out almost ten years after the songs were recorded up in Woodstock at Big Pink in the mid-60's.

These were workmen like tunes that Dylan wrote with ease and humor and it semi-invented the roots rock genre with the easy going charm and back to basics songs. Most of the tunes got leaked out via the Great White Wonder, and the charm of the full release is the equal footing of The Band and Bob as alternating short fun songs makes the album a great listen fifty years on.

While a lot of times when RtBE covers these album anniversaries we will highlight songs and give plus and minuses throughout the record. For The Basement Tapes, it is just much easier to say that the whole album is worth listening to today, there are no bad notes.

So on the 50th Anniversary of the album's release do yourself a favor and give it a spin. Here are a few tunes to get you started. Enjoy!
