Live Review: Malevitus - 1/2/26 @ BJ's in the Bywater New Orleans, LA

Malevitus
1/2/26 @ BJ's in the Bywater
New Orleans, LA

With the New Year comes renewal and for the post-punk outfit Malevitus that meant a return to performing. They took to the stage at BJ’s in the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans for the first time in nine months, Friday night January 2nd.

The quartet of Tiana Hux: vocals, percussion, Marcus Bronson: bass, Rob Cambre: guitar and drummer Jay Steigner eased onto the small stage in front of a receptive crowd as the band began their hour set with “Golden Toy Soldier", the first song off of their debut self-titled album. The tune rails against big corporations, technology and other factors ripping humanity away from humans, while delivering dreamy bass lines, guitar flights of fancy and steady drums.

The enchanting mix of twinkling/clanging guitars over a hip swinging beat accentuated by Hux’s maracas highlighted “Bed Bugs” while “Panhandle” started smooth and motoring before building towards aggressive chaos around angsty talk/sung lyrics. “Rapscallion” was the most muscled up, straight ahead rock and roll on the evening while “Ice Forrest” was much more artsy with poetic lyrics and dancing, around stop start drumming.

“Blood Letter” was a set highlight that found Tiana channeling her inner Patti Smith performing physically as well as vocally in front of Cambre’s masterclass of guitar histrionics. The hearty and heavy groove anchored the strong “Sinister” while the angular “Worship” dug into the band's post punk core.

The show wrapped up with “Sugar & Salt” which got the biggest reaction from the crowd as the rumbling number was a riot on the stage using Tiana’s theatrics and the band’s musicality to great effect, reminiscent of PJ Harvey’s sound and style.

Malevitus may have had a hiatus from live performance’s, but they showed no rust as they got the crowd swaying and shouting along with them during their first show of 2026.
