Things are improving on the pandemic front in this city, but live streams will be an option for the foreseeable future. We will highlight various shows/streams/virtual events for your viewing and listening pleasure and as a way to help out the artists. Today we highlight: MOJO Combo Live From NOLA Jazz Museum Balcony
The debut self-titled release from the New Orleans based quartet Silver Synthetic is a warm reminder of classic rock and roll sweetness and charm. Many mainstream influences pop up over the eight tracks presented here, but also an honesty of playing in a band and crafting woolly tunes molded around love/desire, melody/rhythm and harmonies.
The instant feeling from the self titled album is, "What if The Velvet Underground collaborated with Neil Young" as the group delivers a cool rock vibe with natural loose elements, immediately evident on the opener "In The Beginning" which takes a "Sweet Jane" groove and puts a light twang on it. That vibe continues for "Unchain Your Heart" which injects a bit of Rolling Stone strut while "Around The Bend" wraps up with a great guitar vamp outro; a musical highlight on the record.
The group (Chris Lyons, Lucas Bogner, Pete Campanelli, Kunal Prakash) slow down for "Chasm Killer" which is a rare dull moment on the album but they rev it back up and start chooglin' in CCR style for "Out of the Darkness" which grooves majestically. The shimmering ballad "Unholy Love" and the gorgeously bright riffs of the buoyant "Some Of What You Want" use pop harmonies winningly with light touches of Steve Miller Band and Wilco.
Closer "On The Way Home" uses a dreamy jangle with Beatles like flourishes to wrap up a stunningly strong debut from the New Orleans foursome. Silver Synthetic aren't breaking new ground, just combining excellent influences on their own terms as they craft catchy, easy rolling, rock and roll.
The excellent Drive-By Truckers will be releasing Plan 9 Records July 13th, 2006 tomorrow via digital outlets to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the show.
The incarnation of the band during this time just may be their peak as the group included Mike Cooley, Patterson Hood, Jason Isbell, Brad Morgan, John Neff, and Shonna Tucker.
This was a Plan 9 25th Anniversary celebration as well as a benefit for The Harvey Foundation. Hood would later write the song “Two Daughters and a Beautiful Wife” in tribute to Bryan and his family, recalling the event Hood wrote:
“Our pay was a case of PBR and two bottles of whiskey. There wasn’t a drop left by the end of the encore. They pushed back all of the record shelving to make room for a little over 200 people and cut us loose to play a two hour plus set. Loose and raggedy at times, yet somehow also tighter than shit. It was by far our favorite show of the year and all these years later, I think it is one of the best performances from that era of the band. A few months later, that incarnation of the band was no more and our lives have continued to move in all kinds of mysterious ways. We’re all close friends again and even though it kinda feels like a lifetime ago, it was great to hear these tracks and to re-live the best parts of who we used to be. When you think you have it turned up a little too loud, reach over and turn it up a little bit more.”
The video of this one has been floating around the internet quite a bit but it is great to get some properly mastered live music from the band. Here is "Outfit" from the event. RtBE can't wait to listen and review the full record ASAP.
In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by Sarah Overton of "The Wicked Messenger"
Thoughts on Dylan Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover of this song: A breezy musical number (only 2 minutes long) with some biblical lyrics which actually foreshadow Dylan's religious musical phase that would arrive in the late 70's/early 80's "The Wicked Messenger" has a cool bass line to match the acoustic guitar. Like most of John Wesley Harding there is a mellow mood that tends to play down the lyrics and even masks the fire and brimstone a bit. The song has seemed to pop up every few tours and can usually be found towards the ends of sets, playing the roll of up-tempo-get-down track. Live versions certainly have improved the tracks standing in my mind from the original. Cover:
Thoughts on Cover Artist: This is the first time we are hearing Miss Overton. She only has 3 videos on her youtube page. Thoughts on Cover: A very neat take on this song, as Overton's guitar work flies around her acoustic and her singing is solid as well. It is clearly a casual take, but the interpretation is really solid. RtBE loves it when anyone tries different things with Dylan's tunes and Overton's expressive guitar work is cool.
We search the murky back waters of youtube to find full concerts and post them to the site weekly, come back every seven days to help us celebrate Full Show Friday's. These shows are of varying quality and may not be here for long so enjoy them while you can...As always, please support the artist every which way, but especially by seeing them live (if they are still playing)...This week...John Prine!
Today we focus on the fantastic John Prine who we unfortunately lost to Covid-19 last year. This is a heck of live performance from 2000 and a highlight in a series full of highlights.

That is amazing. Being HUGE fans of RDR this is exciting news to RtBE as we can't wait to see how this plays out when the new update drops on 7/13.
Also Kingfish has a new album 662 arriving at the end of the month that we can't wait to hear as well, you can pre-order it today. RtBE will be reviewing it for the site, but until then here is the Blood Money trailer from Rockstar Games:

To get in the mood here is some music from the artist.
The newest single from Noun has been released and a new EP is on the way titled In The Shade.
Noun is Marissa Paternoster's (Screaming Females) solo project and a long time favorite of RtBE. We interviewed Marissa back in the day regarding this project and we ranked her first album high on our best of the decade list.
Full EP will be released later this summer and the new title tune is below with a Bart Simpson inspired video:

The newest album from The Weather Station is a career turning point as Tamara Lindeman's songs (and a host of musicians) contribute to something larger than individual parts over and over again throughout the excellent Ignorance.
In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by Jake Thistle of "My Back Pages"
The original has taken upon itself a cultural importance, and the chorus has simply become iconic. I doubt Dylan intended such, but it toes the line of out and out protest and illustrative questions. He puts down everyone from evangelists to girls, but the language snakes and flows so magically that it doesn't seem as harsh as "Positively 4th St" or "Ballad in Plain D". The sense of exhaling desperation or at least the realization that age confuses things even more seems to be what I take from this tune after each listen, but things can change...or can they? Cover:
Thoughts on Cover Artist:
This is our first time coming across Jake Thistle.
Thoughts on Cover:
A great guitar based cover, excellent soloing and playing from Thistle. Very well done.

Today we highlight: Peach Music Festival - The String Cheese Incident
The last night of the Peach Music Festival sees a reunited String Cheese Incident take to the stage.
The United States celebrates it's Independence today, and while the country has deep rooted issues and problems we are dealing (and not dealing) with, it is still the best country mankind has founded in our sordid history. So enjoy the outdoors, hanging safely with friends and living life. What better soundtrack for that is there than The Grateful Dead?!?!
(It's official, this is our new 4th of July tradition, so enjoy this great show)
This was played/filmed up at Rich Stadium, home of the Buffalo Bills and captures the Dead in one of their better late period shows, pro audio and video to boot. From the opening "Bertha" to the 1st set closing "Deal" Jerry is just on and seems to be in a great mood, playing and singing with energy, leading the band as only he could. A few personal favorites of RtBE's are in their ("Stagger Lee", "Row Jimmy") adding to us digging on this set.
Not many setlist surprises, just on point playing from the group. The second set starts with their lone hit "Touch of Grey" before the reggae tinge of "Man Smart, Woman Smarter". "Terrapin Station" is always a welcomed 2nd set addition and Garcia takes over for a whirlwind "All Along The Watchtower" and "Morning Dew" mid set combo. RtBE are always a sucker for Brent's work on "I Will Take You Home" as it just melts our hearts and what better encore for the 4th of July then "US Blue's"?
The full set list is below, Enjoy:

Anyone else remember the Sessions at West 54th St. series? It was a good one. Here is Liz Phair's appearance on the show back in 1999. Taped from TV so a bit fuzzy but good sound, full setlist below. Enjoy:

Today we highlight: Peach Music Festival - Pigeons Playing Ping Pong + Dark Star Orchestra
The first of three live streaming events from the Peach Music Festival kicks off today with Pigeons Playing Ping Pong and Dark Star Orchestra.
Grab tickets here and to get in the mood here is a tune from PPPP:
It is of Cedric Burnside's newest release, I Be Trying.
This is a hell of a blues album as Burnside has gotten it all working with a crack band helping out. RtBE liked his last release, but I Be Trying feels like a big step forward. Great stuff.
