Album Review: Taqbir - Victory Belongs To Those Who Fight For A Right Cause

Taqbir
Victory Belongs To Those Who Fight For A Right Cause
*** out of *****

Taqbir is a punk band from Morocco who are raging against the oppressive religious society on their debut offering Victory Belongs To Those Who Fight For A Right Cause. The band is secretive about their identity because of their outspoken stances in a repressive culture.

Singing in Moroccan Arabic the outfit is fed up with the religious based, extreme patriarchal oppressive society in which they have to live. This is true punk rock as their dangerous stance could have disastrous consequences; they are playing the music for radical change.

This would not matter as much if the tunes themselves weren't as effective as they are in their raw punk style. Opener "Sma3" uses feedback and a pumped up bass line in almost industrial fashion to kick-start the short EP. The marching drums and ringing guitar propel "Aisha Qandisha" forward with power and purpose, while closer "Al-Zuki Akbar" drives everything home with groove based hardcore punk rock.

"Tfou 3lik" is the short EP's centerpiece extending almost to three minutes. It starts with a spoken word declaration before increasing the speed, focusing on screeching verses, chant along choruses slamming riffs and big breaks that inspire. A dynamite offering as the band ravages and rumbles with passion and a fierceness.

Taqbir's Victory Belongs To Those Who Fight For A Right Cause is a reminder of the visceral power of music, the feeling that honest punk rock screeds can literally change the world.
