A fantastic singer/songwriter from Nashville, Becky is going live today at 2pm Central. RtBE first came across Becky on Jeopardy of all places, then fell in love her most recent release Undesirable. You can download the album from her bandcamp site. It is a great one and we even ranked it on our list of favorites from the last decade.

Every April we have a special showcase for bands who are playing this years Jazzfest in NOLA. Today we will focus on Big Sam's Funky Nation who will be playing Saturday May 2nd on the Congo Square Stage.
Unfortunately due to the outbreak of Covid19, Jazzfest has been rescheduled for October (no official date as of yet). Hopefully all of the scheduled acts are healthy and will be performing then, but since we crafted these posts before the outbreak, RtBE will still post them this month and will regroup/revisit things in the fall when (hopefully) things return to semi-normal
Last year Big Sam's Funky Nation was one of the highlights of Jazzfest for RtBE, so we wanted to start this month of Full Show Friday's focusing on artists playing the festival in 2020 with them. This show is from 2018 from Jazz Saint Javier and it shows off the Nation's funky style and killer showmanship from Big Sam himself.

Every day at 4:20 CST Brendan Benson presents his 'Boy In A Bubble' series. He delivers a live song, smokes some herb and chats with his fans. It is a very personal and super cool series that he is running as he interacts with a lot of the comments and questions as well as doing a live tune and chatting about his time in isolation.
Benson also has a new album coming out very soon which we will be reviewing for Glide. Here is our favorite entry in this series so far, the music starts about 6:30 in if you want to skip to that.
It is of Thundercat's newest release It Is What It Is.
We reviewed his last album, Drunk, for Glide as well giving it nine stars....this one is better. While not up to his amazing live show, which topped our list last year, it is still a great mix of whimsy, seriousness and overall cool sounds.
The album is a winner and should propel Stephen Bruner even higher. Support the artist, buy the album and peep some video below:
The Reggaeton/Latin Trap star Bad Bunny's newest album is a loose relaxed record as YHLQMDLG finds the artist on top of his game and the genre.
This release is a mix of stripped down simplistic moody numbers and full on over the top produced dance floor fillers. It opens on more barren front as ""Si Veo a Tu Mama" takes a Casio keyboard version of "The Girl From Ipanema" and little else to set the mood, but things kick up as the instrumentation and vibe increases on tracks like "Pera Ya No" which uses vinyl sampling, twinkling pianos and distorted vocals and "La Santa" which increases the energy around a fun beat and a guest spot from Daddy Yankee.
The yin/yang in energy and more sullen tracks continues as "Solia" uses grooving percussion, "La Zona" is a banging dance track and "Bichiyal" digs deep with the bass bumps while welcoming Yaviah for vocals; all are sweaty numbers. The more inner looking efforts like "Vete", "Ignorantes", "Puesto Per Guerrial" and "25/8" all flirt with minimalist modern hip hop/trap style, but manage to retain the bass, just not the upbeat energy.
The genre and Bad Bunny work best when he is layering sounds on top of samples on top of 808's, basically the more the merrier as the energy and sound drive the best efforts here like "Saferfa". The standout tune uses hip hop samples, thick/thin beats, digital distortion while moving through a variety of styles with the help of Jowell & Randy and Ñengo Flow.
The tune is a mashup of genres this is what Bad Bunny does best, "A Tu Merced" amps up the reggae vibe around huge beats, "P FKN R" uses horror movie soundtrack sounding beats (with Kendo Kaponi and Arcángel) and "Esta Cabron Ser Yo" (with Anuel AA) both manages to increase the gangster flow and the flamenco guitar quotients on the record. "Hablamos Manana" is a catchy hook with supporting rhymes from Duki and Pablo Chill-E as producers Tainy and Albert Hype overload the groove with laser blast as Bad Bunny brings the record to a close.
While there isn't a mega cross over hit here, the quality level remains high throughout as the full album moves with a swagger and confidence progressing through Bad Bunny's filter. The Puerto Rican star will only rise higher on the back of YHLQMDLG.

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by Ed Butler Band of "The Wicked Messenger"

A breezy musical number (only 2 minutes long) with some biblical lyrics which actually foreshadow Dylan's religious musical phase that would arrive in the late 70's/early 80's "The Wicked Messenger" has a cool bass line to match the acoustic guitar. Like most of John Wesley Harding there is a mellow mood that tends to play down the lyrics and even masks the fire and brimstone a bit. The song has seemed to pop up every few tours and can usually be found towards the ends of sets, playing the roll of up-tempo-get-down track. Live versions certainly have improved the tracks standing in my mind from the original. Cover Tune:

The first live stream we saw during quarantine was Relix Live presenting the very recent BB King tribute from the Capital Theater last Friday. It was a hell of a show with our favorite performance being John Scofield and Ivan Neville leading the all-star band through "Never Make Your Move Too Soon".
Looking back at old Jammy's is great as is the Marcus King Monday's. So enjoy the shows from the privacy of your own house. Here are two clips to hype you up for the shows.
Retro from the drop, Tami Neilson's newest record recalls a time back in the mid fifties when R&B, Rockabilly, Country, Blues and Soul were just starting to merge into rock and roll. CHICKABOOM! is a throwback album in every sense, from the cover art, to the brief simple tunes to Neilson's beehive hairstyle.
In her youth she toured in a family band opening and playing with the likes of Johnny Cash, Tanya Tucker, and Kitty Wells and she continued that family vibe on this record as her brother Jay plays bass/rhythm guitar while Delaney Davidson- Lead Guitar and Joe McCallum- Drums/Percussion round out the group. Neilson mentioned that for this record she “wanted to write an album of punchy little songs, popping firecrackers that, when stripped back to nothing but a guitar, percussion and two voices, would still go boom!” and for the most part she succeed.
Oddly the album starts out fairly tame with "Call Your Momma" doing a mild Etta James jaunt, and "Hey, Bus Driver" serviceable rockabilly but neither catches fire. "Ten Tonne Truck" is a fun excursion with hand claps and "Queenie, Queenie" recalls the stripped down style of The Dixie Cups successfully but nothing on the first half of the album really explodes.
However, the songs on the second half of the album are all winners with the clear highlight being "You Were Mine". Neilson unleashes a blues vocal for the ages as she rips into a grooving low down torch song with fiery passion. Brett Adams joins on lead guitar for this number as the band form a solid groove around the throbbing heights of guitar and vocals; a stunner.
Things stay hot on "16 Miles of Chain" as warbling six strings dance and shimmer around another killer vocal from Neilson, the tune is a fitting ode/updated tribute to the Merle Travis tune "16 Tons". Two successful sides of the country coin are displayed as "Tell Me That You Love Me" dives into the road house frantic rambling anything-can-happen style while "Any Fool with a Heart" swings directly into Nashville pop arena.
Neilson and company pay tribute to a legend on "Sister Mavis" as the band revs up a Staples style rocker with Tami testifying for the tile singer in powerful gospel style. Pretty closer "Sleep" strips down a lullaby as Neilson closes CHICKABOOM! simply singing to her children, who have this music in their blood, just like Tami herself.
