Album Review: Alison Solo - Plutonian

The singer-songwriter/multi instrumentalist Alison Solo's newest release is a mix of classic/pop/arena rock, with a backbone of the blues, as the Vancouver based artist rips it up and blows it out on Plutonian.

After a short swinging backwoods to Broadway dramatic opener "American Dream", things really kick into gear with "Chiron" which displays all of Solo's style, climbing to 70's rock radio heights around wah-wah'ing guitar solo's and a singalong ready outro. The record was mixed by the legendary Ron Nevison (The Who, Thin Lizzy) and that big rock sound is everywhere as "Glass Window" employs an acoustic opening before thundering drums and bass lines rumble around Solo's vocals with ominous undertones that recall 90's grunge.

Solo's singing is an immediate draw as she can clearly soar above the layers of instrumentation including the guitars and bass which she dynamically provides as well. Along with her ripping guitar solos and bass lines her backing vocals to herself add a dimension to the songs as she accompanies her own voice winningly. Lyrically things stay general and at an arms length while sounds go over the top at times musically, like on the keyboard amped "Beautiful and Old".

Restraint could be urged, but when songs like "Sister Rosetta Thorpe" turn out so well it is hard to argue against Solo. The number fuses the best groove on the album with a sultry vocal and powerhouse blues playing from all involved (Solo vocals/guitar/bass, James Last drums, Tony Edwards keys/organ) in a tribute to a clear hero of Solo's. The looser blues rambling of the brief "What You Hide You Can't Hurt" show that while her sound is pristine clean, a rawer/looser blues style may hold the key going forward.       

"Last One Standing" is another grooving number which could fit in The Black Crowes set list, before the album wraps up with an acoustic ballad "Old English" in Let It Bleed style. Solo does have a tendency to go long as the majority of the rock tracks run over four plus minutes and her sound is produced on a pristine professional level which sounds great, but also tends towards overproduction, smoothing over the grit/feeling of her vocals and playing.

There are a lot of parallels to Samantha Fish's style as Solo goes large and can sing and play up a fiery storm. Immensely talented with dynamic singing and superior guitar slinging ability Solo displays a ton of strengths throughout Plutonian

Today we highlight: Grim Year Wednesdays

Grim Year Wednesdays is a virtual fundraiser for Virginia Anti-Violence Project, who “work[s] to address and end violence, with a specific focus on LGBT and queer communities across Virginia.” It streams every Wednesday at 7:30 PM ET on Zoom with interviews and performances.

This week’s includes an interview with Pierce from SOUL GLO, and a performance/interview with Luke Henderiks (Teenage Halloween, Kissies, VOLTORB).

Album Review: Rain of Salvation - In Times of Desperation EP

The East Coast Straightedge Hardcore outfit Rain of Salvation deliver a perfectly timed and titled EP with In Times of Desperation.

While the fury hits the same raw nerve that the majority of the country is feeling right now, the band is a throwback to early 90's sounding metal-core of Upstate New York with parallels to Earth Crisis and Snapcase. Those similarities begin with the album art, the straight edge message and continue right into the pummeling tunes.

The three brief tracks presented here directly attack the listener with crunchy guitars, screamed vocals and powerful low-end. The thin slapping snare is the only odd sound as the band (Bass – Zach Stachura Drums – Sal Argento Guitar – Mike Marazzo, TJ Rotolico Vocals – James Austin) locks in and cooks.

Opener "The Sound of Triumph" uses drill-like guitar riffs and dramatic builds to a pummeling finale as Austin screams out, helped by additional vocal yelps from Xavier Wilson."October Sky" might be the best of the short bunch with it's frantic pace, aggressive percussion and brutal uptempo riffing as Geo Hewitt and Harold Griffin help out on vocals.

Closing with the title track the group leaves space for breakdowns and bust-ups with it's slamming stop start head banging breaks. While the album was recorded a few months back the band realizes it's lock step in current cultural times and will be donating to non-profits. As they state

Rain of Salvation is demonstratively straight edge and affecting change in society with monetary donations and through In Times of Desperation's blistering sound. Here's hoping a full length is on the horizon.

Album Review: Run The Jewels - RTJ4

Hey all, got a new review up @glidemag which you can read Right C'here!!!

It is of Run The Jewels newest release RTJ4.

There couldn't be a better timed album and it is easy to see why the band pushed up its release to June 1st as they talk directly about the current state of affairs (like on every other album of theirs) with passion and conviction.

RtBE have been long time fans of RTJ, catching them live (which turned out to be our favorite show from 2015), enjoying RTJ3 and ranking their second album as our favorite hip album of the last decade.

A great record that will probably top a lot of year end lists. Support the artists and their causes, read the review, download the record for yourself and peep some video below:

Dylan Cover #431 George Possley "Dignity" Live

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by George Possley playing "Dignity"

Thoughts on Original:
"Dignity" is a straight ahead song which Dylan battled with during the recording of Oh Mercy with Daniel Lanois. In lesser hands it might not mean much, but these are Dylan's words and things seem weightier, but it also isn't mind blowing or particularly tied to Dylan which makes it a good candidate for covering.

It was originally recorded with Dylan accompanied by Brian Stoltz and Willie Green. Though they managed to complete a polished performance, producer Daniel Lanois suggested something more ambitious with a Cajun band. Curious to see what Lanois had in mind, Dylan agreed to recut the song. The next evening, a session was held with Rockin' Dopsie and His Cajun Band, but the results were disastrous. The group experimented with different keys and tempos, but according to Dylan, everyone was frustrated with the results. 

Dylan still preferred the original version recorded the previous day, but neither he nor Lanois considered it finished. As the session continued into the early morning hours, the group gave up and began playing old standards like "Jambalaya", "Your Cheatin' Heart", and "There Stands the Glass". The next day, they listened to every take of "Dignity" recorded with Dopsie and his band, and all of them were rejected. "Whatever promise Dan had seen in the song was beaten into a bloody mess", Dylan recalled. "Where we had started from, we'd never gotten back to, a fishing expedition gone nowhere. In no take did we ever turn back the clock. We just kept winding it. Every take another ball of confusion." "Dignity" was set aside, never to be revisited for the remainder of the sessions.

Neil Young Lost 1975 Album Homegrown Coming 6/19

Neil Young recorded Homegrown back in 1975 and it sat on the shelf until recently when it was unearthed dusted off and set up for release later this month.

Young has spoken directly to the albums release:

I apologize. This album Homegrown should have been there for you a couple of years after Harvest. It’s the sad side of a love affair. The damage done. The heartache. I just couldn’t listen to it. I wanted to move on. So I kept it to myself, hidden away in the vault, on the shelf, in the back of my mind….but I should have shared it. It’s actually beautiful. That’s why I made it in the first place. Sometimes life hurts. You know what I mean. This is the one that got away. Recorded in analog in 1974 and early 1975 from the original master tapes and restored with love and care by John Hanlon. Levon Helm is drumming on some tracks, Karl T Himmel on others, Emmylou Harris singing on one Homegrown contains a narration, several acoustic solo songs never even published or heard until this release and some great songs played with a great band of my friends, including Ben Keith – steel and slide – Tim Drummond – bass and Stan Szelest – piano. Anyway, it’s coming your way in 2020, the first release from our archive in the new decade. Come with us into 2020 as we bring the past.

Album Review: Grateful Dead - June '76 Box Set

Box sets from any group are for the hardcore fans and this gorgeous release from the Grateful Dead highlights a period which the band has not showcased much in the past. June '76 is a perfect combination as diehards will eat it up and the music presented is wonderful to get lost in even if you are not super familiar with the group.

Dylan Cover #430 Kappa Danielson "Senor (Tales of Yankee Power)" Live

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by the Kappa Danielson of the Dylan tune "Senor (Tales of Yankee Power)"

Thoughts on Original:
From the first time we talked about this tune:
A layered and moving song, the real highlight on a mixed up Dylan album (Street Legal), "Senor (Tales of Yankee Power)" is musically riveting and lyrically haunting.  Acoustic plucking, rolling drums and a forlorn trumpet color the tune musically while some straight ahead lyrics mix with the surreal and backup singers add "Oooh and Aaaah" behind the nasal delivery of the Bard.  Looking at the "Painted Wagon" and smelling the "Tail of the Dragon" are just two examples of bizarre lyrics that could pertain to nuclear war or something else entirely making it all even more enchanting.  A gorgeous music background with perplexing lyrics and a strong vocal performance...yup, I dig this one a ton.
