Album Review: Sonic Youth - Live in Brooklyn 2011
“This show was a culmination of a run of really special outdoor summertime shows in New York City for us, starting in ’92 with Summerstage in Central Park when we played with Sun Ra. For the Williamsburg Waterfront show I wrote out the set list to present to the band and it was a lot of material we hadn’t played in a while, a lot of deep cuts, so I wasn’t sure if everybody would feel like doing it. After worrying about which songs the band might say yes or no to, I threw those concerns out the window and I just made a list of songs that I thought would be a great set. We practiced the week of the show at our space in Hoboken and put the set together. First we’d try and make sure we had a guitar in the song’s tuning, then we’d try to remember the arrangement and try and put it together, sometimes re-learning bar by bar. In the end I think the whole song list made it through. Even as early as ’86 and ’87 we stopped playing ‘Death Valley 69’ and ‘Brave Men Run’ with any regularity. We’d just get excited about new material coming into the set and songs would get ‘retired’ and wouldn’t get played again for years. So on this particular night in Brooklyn a lot of those retired songs and deep cuts got dusted off and played for this show. It turned out to be a pretty special event with a really special song list.”

Dylan Cover #571 Sarah Jarosz "Meet Me In The Morning" Live
A swaggering track that rose out of the ashes of "Call Letter Blues" (which was later released on The Bootleg Series Volume 1-3) "Meet Me In The Morning" is a shot of blues after the blissfully mournful "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go" as it kicks off side two of the famous Blood On The Tracks. The song is one of the ones Dylan recorded in NYC for Blood on the Tracks and it pulses with the city's energy. A cool note about this straight ahead song (which is tailored made for covering) is that Jack White is a big fan, playing it at times at his shows and got Dylan to perform it for the only time ever on 9/19/07 in Nashville, TN.

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
This is actually the second time we are featuring Sarah in this series. Way back in 2015 she graced cover #188, doing her version of "Simple Twist of Fate". Wow, this series has been going on forever...Oh and Jarosz is legit.

Dylan Cover #462 Ron Miles "Senor (Tales of Yankee Power)" Live
In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by the Ron Miles of the Dylan tune "Senor (Tales of Yankee Power)"
Jazzy January has invade Mondays! All this month we will check out various artists covering Dylan with a jazz vibe.
From the first time we talked about this tune:
A layered and moving song, the real highlight on a mixed up Dylan album (Street Legal), "Senor (Tales of Yankee Power)" is musically riveting and lyrically haunting. Acoustic plucking, rolling drums and a forlorn trumpet color the tune musically while some straight ahead lyrics mix with the surreal and backup singers add "Oooh and Aaaah" behind the nasal delivery of the Bard. Looking at the "Painted Wagon" and smelling the "Tail of the Dragon" are just two examples of bizarre lyrics that could pertain to nuclear war or something else entirely making it all even more enchanting. A gorgeous music background with perplexing lyrics and a strong vocal performance...yup, I dig this one a ton.

Dylan Cover #394 Pete Townshend "Corrina, Corrina" Live
Thoughts on Original:
Early Dylan took folk songs that had been out there forever, placed sometimes small, sometimes large changes onto them and re-wrote the suckers making history. "Corrina, Corrina" is one of those which showed up on The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. Originally recorded by Bo Carter in 1928 the tune has had tons of covers, everyone from The Mississippi Sheiks to Blind Lemon Jefferson, each adding their own flair to the number. Bob's rendition is a short jaunty tune which has a good beat, bounces around and features Dylan's harmonica, acoustic and great vocals. Not deep, just pretty and sweet.

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
We are celebrating The Who all month in our Masters series. They are one of RtBE's all-time favorites. This is Pete solo, which is pretty damn great.
Thoughts on Cover:
Pete explains why he covers this song at the beginning of the video, very very cool. I wish we could hear these explanations for all of the people we have featured in this cover series which is now pushing 400! The discussion at the beginning is even cooler than the song, which is delicate, fragile twinkling take on the folk tune.

Full Show Friday: Bruno Mars 2011
This week it is the popular Bruno Mars who seems to never leave the Billboard Top 5. He is a pleasant combination of Stevie, Michael, and Prince without any of their edge. While not a fan of his, we have nothing against him at all. In fact, if that Met shirt in the picture is the truth, we may have to start giving him some more love.
Here he is from 2011. Pro Shot, Pro Sound, Enjoy:

Dylan Cover #268 Patti Smith "Boots Of Spanish Leather"
From the first time we highlighted someone covering this tune:
One of the first Dylan songs that really bowled me over. I know on the Times They Are a-Changin' there are a ton of epic songs but this was the track that stayed with me the longest. It is ghostly in it's presentation and still just as dynamic now as when he wrote it back in 1963. My favorite show I have seen Dylan play live was back in 1999 at the RPI Fieldhouse. The whole night was great, my favorite backing band of his since The Band, a tiny venue and a setlist that was magical. One of the major highlights was "Boots of Spanish Leather", I need to break out that bootleg this week and re-live that great night.

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
Patti Smith blew us away when we caught her opening for Neil Young & Crazy Horse. In complete honesty we were never a fan before those performances (we caught her twice) and we were instantly turned on our ears as she is a genuine rock star.
