Album Review: Classixx -Hanging Gardens

Classixx
Hanging Gardens

Two DJ's who have gained popularity for remixing other artists are putting out their first album together of original material, titled Hanging Gardens. The dance music contained on the disk is smooth enjoyable and breezy; these EDM tunes ping and bounce.

Opening with the title track the layers build and swirl. Coming from LA the duo of Michael David and Tyler Blake infuse a distinct relaxed SoCal vibe that is evident from the get go; more afternoon pool lounging then late night thumping throw-downs.

Tracks like the rhythmic focused "Fax From The Beach" and "Dominoes" with it's sparkling swirls and "oh-ya" calls continue that vibe.  Guest vocalists show up to add some distinction, Nancy Whang from LCD Soundsystem adds breathy lyrics over a warbling keyboard line in "All You're Waiting For", and Jeppe shows up on the techno tinged "I'll Get You". "Long Lost" features Active Child over new wave inspired beats while "A Stranger Love" showcases Sarah Chernoff of Superhumanoids.

At times things can seem generic ("Holding On") or stick around too long dulling ("Jozi's Fire") but overall Hanging Gardens makes a solid summer soundtrack for EDM fans looking to chill out.

Here at RtBE we will freely admit that EDM is not our bag...pretty far from it. However, one thing though we always try to do is sample and review different music; if you ain't evolving you are rusting.

This first album from Classixx seems perfectly acceptable in the genre, will we ever personally throw this on to get down?  Probably not, but that shouldn't stop a review for fans of any music.
