Before going out on his Claypool Gold Tour this summer, Les Claypool released a double album with Sean Lennon, an EP with his Fearless Flying Frog Brigade, and this EP, A Handful of Nuggs from Primus, so that each act on the bill would have new material to display on stage. Primus is Les' main squeeze, but out of the three, it got the shortest shrift, as there isn't a whole lot to dig into.

Live Review: Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade - 6/23/23 Capitol Theater, Port Chester, NY

A great show all around, it is amazing that I first saw the band during their debut tour back in 2000 at Irving Plaza.

Les Claypool Revives Fearless Flying Frog Brigade for Tour

The Colonel is back, as Col Les Claypool and the Fearless Flying Frog Brigade take to the skies once more.

While not the original lineup, Claypool has brought in some high profile friends and will be playing again live with two sets of material, the second of which being Pink Floyd's Animals in it's entirety again. The tour takes it across with country with some killer opening acts (including RtBE fav Fishbone). 

RtBE are big Frog's fans, still listening to the the two live releases and the studio album Purple Onion often. I was lucky enough to catch a few stops on the original tour, including Irving Plaza and House of Blues Las Vegas, so I have seen Animals live and it is a good time. This tour should be a tripped out adventure as well.

Album Review: Primus - Conspiranoid EP

These days Primus is just one outlet for the freaky frontman/bass maestro Les Claypool as he has everything from Bastard Jazz to wine making to Oysterhead going on, but the brief new EP Conspiranoid is some of the strongest music this trio has put out in some time. It maintains the bands heavier roots while incorporating their fearless leaders more spaced out vibes, which have always been coursing through this groups collective veins. 

The opening song, "Conspiranoia" is the longest studio song of Primus' career and it is a winning mix of old school sounds from the band with the tripped out Pink Floyd and prog influences Claypool normally deploys on his Claypool Lennon Delirium outings. Lyrically Les is dealing with modern day conspiracy theories and those who blindly or willingly follow them. Musically the trio deploy deep thumps/freaky bass runs and Larry LaLonde flights of sonic fancy on guitar. The jam which starts around six minutes in is prime Primus as the explosive trio navigate these psychedelia tinged waters before breaking it back down to the heavy groove motif.   

The ending goes on long with samples of flat earthers, COVID myths and other lies prominent in society these days as the band begrudgingly chunks along. That vibe of idiocy is continued in the following "Follow The Fool" but the aggression is amped with Tim "Herb" Alexanders percussion hitting hard around Claypool's sticky bass lines latching on to ear cannels. 

The short EP closes with an oddly funky "Erin on the Side of Caution", delivering freaky guitar work from LaLonde, around a thundering low end laid down by Herb and Les, slamming to life two minutes in and delivering those classic Primus sounds with a new engaging twist. 

The only regret from this release is that there isn't more of it as Les, Ler and Herb seem to be back in the groove that made them one of the most interesting bands while they were at their peak a few decades ago. Hopefully Primus have some more in the tank ready to go in the near future as the Conspiranoid EP is a strong dose.

Bonnaroo Lineup Announced, Scheduled for Labor Day 2021

It is no April Fools, one of the largest festivals in the country, Bonnaroo has been scheduled for Labor Day Weekend 2021. Here's hoping enough vaccines and preventive measures take place between now and then so this and other fall festivals happen safely. 

It is a very varied lineup but for fans of live music this is a huge step forward:

Year In Review 2020 - Favorite Live Show #SaveOurStages

The live show is a slippery thing. There are lots of variables at play, most having little to do with the performance itself. Does the venue have enough bathrooms? Is it going to rain? What day of the week is it on? Did I have a shitty day at work before hand? Did tickets cost waaay too much? All of this effects one's opinion of a live show before the band even tunes up and with reason, but when the stars align, there is no place RtBE would rather be then in the moment of magic occurring spontaneously from the stage.

Live Music Has No Equal!

RtBE has used that same introductory paragraph for years now. It hurts as we read it in 2020. Live music is everything and this year mostly robbed it from us. Live streams during the year of Covid-19 will make up the bulk of this list and we hope this is the only year we ever have to suffer through so little live music, but who knows... 

We watched a lot of live streams and tried to promote them as much as we possibly could for the artists, various charities and the venues who rely on the revenue. Hopefully all survive through 2021 and things can trickle back into action. #SaveOurStages

Year In Review 2017- Top 10 Albums Part 1: The Just Misses & Let Downs

Another great year is finishing up for @RockBodElec and we wouldn't be a proper music site if we didn't end the year with a "Best Of" list, so RtBE Presents the Best of 2017 Top Ten Albums Part One: The Just Misses & Let Downs:

In the instance that RtBE has reviewed the album either on the site or somewhere else we will link to that review and just give a quick summation, just click on the name and title and you can read it. As always RtBE worked with the Glide Team to give input on the their Top 20, so expect some overlap (though not as much as in years past).

Again the focus here is on full albums, not singles, but complete releases you can slap on and listen all the way through. We know these are a dying breed, but it still is the way we consume music, no shuffle or singles for RtBE.

Today we are going to focus on the "Just Misses" of our top ten and unfortunately the "Let Downs" released this year. Album Review: Primus - The Desaturating Seven

It is of Primus new album The Desaturating Seven. RtBE love Primus, and have seen them live a bunch of times but have been let down by their recent releases. We didn't care for Green Naugahyde, we actually disliked their Wonka effort and now have been bored by this release.

Needless to say we are taking a beating on the comment section of that review, however very few comments have addressed the actual music on the album. People are happy to shit on me, which is fine, but I would rather have a conversation about the actual tunes and how they don't go anywhere. I am also guessing these commentators are on the younger side and did not grow up with Primus because if you like or dislike this album it is about as far from Frizzle Fry as you can get.

Full Show Friday: Oysterhead Bonnaroo 2006

We are focusing all month on the freaky magic of Les Claypool and his assorted, amazingly weird side projects. This week Oysterhead!

Why not start off with the highest profile side project the man ever had? In fact, if you just came to see this band Les would probably be the least recognizable out of the trio on stage. Claypool teamed with Trey Anastasio and Stewart Copeland famously back in 2000 for a late night New Orleans Superfly Jam session...basically a precursor to Bonnaroo itself. 

This is the first show they played together since they toured in 2001.While a bit sloppy it is still fun to hear the band get after it. We will always love this group and we saw them a bunch back on that '01 tour which was a crazy year all around. Setlist and info below oh and they actually take the stage at the 1:51 mark if you want to skip ahead.

Tool To Tour With Primus in 2016

Our 10th grade self just freaked out a little bit when we found out a reformed Tool will be touring with Primus.

While we stopped listening to Tool after 1993's Undertow, we could be down to check this out, but as of now the tour dates seem to be keeping them west and south.

One thing is for certain the visuals on this night are going to be really intense. Until the tour peep some video of both bands below:

Live Review: Primus and Dinosaur Jr. 7/30/15 Pier 97 NYC

Two of RTBE's Personal Favorites played on a pier jutting out into the Hudson for an excellent night of music last Thursday. While the day was one of the nastiest in recent memory, sweltering 90+ humidity soaked heat and constant torrential downpours, the evening proved glorious. The heat broke, the rain held out and the tunes started.

The only downside to the night was the insanely early start time, 6pm for a Thursday show. We missed openers The Ghost Of A Saber Tooth Tiger completely and walked in when Dinosaur Jr. was already on stage. Walking in during "Out There" found J. Lou and Murph in mid set form blasting away. "Pieces" showcased J's vocals blowing into the Hudson while his six string provided immense buzzing goodness. "Feel The Pain" and "Freak Scene" brought in the 90's buzz bin vibe while the 80's got revisited with the bands pounding take on "Just Like Heaven".

Thankfully the group saved the best for last with a huge "Sludgefeast" that showcased not only J's amazing solos but a pummeling Barlow on bass. Ending with a jam that got sluggish in the vein of Black Sabbath, the song was a clear set highlight.

While it is true, we have been pretty down on Primus here recently at RtBE, this nights show restored our faith and was one of the best Primus concert we have witness in a long time. Walking out one by one, Ler, Herb and Les started up "Those Damn Blue-Collar Tweekers" one by one, massively pumping up the crowd.  

While Les has expanded into freakout hippyland as of late, all areas of the Primus song catalog was covered on this night. "Lee Van Cleef" and the good beat of "Last Salmon Man" highlighted the Green era work, while "Semi-Wondrous Boat Ride" was the only (thankfully) nod to Wonka on the evening.

The highlight songs were all from earlier Primus albums though, with Mr. Krinkle really digging deep via less on stand up bass, Herb's pounding on "Eleven" and Larry's spaced out flares for "Southbound Pachyderm". The band also saved something left for the encore as "Mr. Knowitall" and "Too Many Puppies" turned the concert pier into a slam fest.

Throughout the gorgeous evening Les commented many times on the night, his songs (hilariously giving credit to Bono for writing "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver") and the NYPD boat floating next to the stage. Clearly the cops were fans as they blew their whistle for approval when asked for and had I been able to tell my 14 year old self that I would be able to see Primus and Dinosaur Jr.'s original players performing on par with the best they ever had nearly 25 years later, I would be tooting the horn as well.
