Album Review: Bush Tetras - They Live In My Head

The long running NYC based post-punks, Bush Tetras had a resurgence a few years back when they released a career spanning box set called Rhythm and Paranoia in 2021. On the back of that the group decided to reconvene and record a new album. 

Unfortunately, original drummer Dee Pop passed away before the band could capture the tunes, so Pat Place, Cynthia Sley and RB Korbet recruited Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelly who also produced the newest full length from the band, They Live In My Head. Shelly is a perfect fit for the group, adding heft and dexterity to the band's sound throughout the eleven songs presented here.

The album opens with the groups solid, groove centered, post-punk as "Bird on a Wire" uses thumping bass and drums, scratchy guitars and a spacey singing style that sets the tone for what is to follow. The group shifts to the Lower East Side dance floor, by way of Paris with "Tout Est Meilleur", an upbeat, hopeful number sung in French by Sley while "Things I Put Together" slows everything back down with strutting confidence. 

"2020 Vision" recalls the crazy times we all just went through with revved up energy while "I Am Not a Member" delivers a tasty slice of glam rock from the group. The album centerpiece is "Walking Out the Door" as the track uses start/stop stomping before melding into a spacey jam with a noisy, wandering guitar.    

The group goes back to their post-punk roots with "So Strange" (even tossing in some random piano work) while "Ghost of People" has an ominous rumbling but goes on a bit too long. The title track is better as it starts acoustic then kicks in with an almost poppy punk sweetness while "Another Room" gets minds swirling and the aptly titled "The End" closes the album on a galloping note. 

With a member passing so close to recording, this project could have been scrapped, but fans of post-punk will rejoice that Shelley joined the group and Bush Tetras delivered an album as rock solid as They Live In My Head.

New Video/Single From Kandle, "Live A Lie"

The Canadian singer/songwriter Kandle has a new song out, "Live A Lie"

With this song being about living a lie, and the search for the truth, we decided to make the music video an episode of The X-Files! This cinematic homage still layers in some welcome levity, with epic performance pieces and considerably more dancing than an X-Files episode typically contains. Happy 30th anniversary X-Files!

Live Review: Christone "Kingfish" Ingram @ Brooklyn Bowl 10/12/23

It is of the Christone "Kingfish" Ingram show from Thursday night at Brooklyn Bowl in Wiliamsburg.

RtBE are huge fans of Kingfish, having reviewed his albums and seen him live previously, and his show from The Apollo was our favorite concert we caught last year. He is fantastic and worth seeing whenever he plays, so definitely catch him live.  We will be posting a review of his new live album soon as well.

It should also be noted that opener Mathias Lattin is no slouch either, he can play with the best of them and he only just turned 21.

Dylan Cover #602 Luke LeBlanc "She Belongs To Me" Live

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by Luke LeBlanc playing "She Belongs To Me"

Thoughts on Original:
The first song in this series was a different cover of this track, here is what I wrote about it then and still feel the same way:
This is a gem of a song, a twisted tale that entwines beauty and deceit, darkness and sparkling Egyptian Red Rings.  One of Dylan's best in it's mystery, elusiveness and bitter biting undertones; really pure Dylan and one of his all time classics.  Loved it when I first heard it, still love it today.

Luke LeBlanc is a Minneapolis based singer songwriter.  This is the first time RtBE has come across Luke.

Live Stream: Run The Jewels - 4 Albums In 4 Nights Live from Los Angeles

We are now heading into the new normal with live music during the Covid-19 and beyond era. Live shows will need to be flexible and live streaming is a great way to keep music going. Streams have become essential for live music junkies like RtBE. Things are (hopefully) improving on the pandemic front but live streams will be an option for artists during the foreseeable future. We will highlight various shows/streams/virtual events for your viewing and listening pleasure and as a way to help out the artists. You can check out our weekly Full Show Friday series for concerts from the past and as always, please support the artists any which way you can.

Covering the Dave's Picks series, and really any Grateful Dead release at this point, it needs to be noted that a lot of great shows have already been professionally released. The selections are running thin when it comes to must own, professionally released shows. Even this year the band released the huge Here Comes Sunshine box set and stand alone 6/10/73 monster show, which really is must hear.  

Dave's Picks 47: December 9, 1979 @ Kiel Auditorium St. Louis, Missouri is not in that same orbit, but it is a fine little show from an era from which Dave has released a few shows already. Nothing earth shattering here, just an OK-to-good night of Grateful Dead music, which is pretty damn fine anyway you slice it.

Dylan Cover #601 Marshall Crenshaw "Bob Dylan's 115th Dream" Live

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by Marshall Crenshaw playing "Bob Dylan's 115th Dream"

Thoughts on Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover of this tune:
Showing up on one of Bob's greatest accomplishments Bringin' It All Back Home, "Bob Dylan's 115th Dream" always feels like a breather in the albums context. It is silly, the playful Dylan, a Dylan that still exists and can be forgotten about especially when getting "deep" into his serious songs. A vital part of Bob is his playful charm, and amongst the silliness and simple word play on this track he still manages to drop some bombs, " I said, 'You know they refused Jesus, too'/He said, 'You're not him'". A great example of a level of Bob's genius not often exhibit in this series, his playfulness.

Marshall Crenshaw is a hell of a songwriter/guitar player/all round musician. RtBE last caught him at the Nuggets celebration this summer and have been a fan of his for a while now. 

Thoughts on Cover:
A rollicking electric blues jam that Crenshaw and company kick on out, with fun abandon that the tune deserves. Wild, wooly stuff. 

 

Oh and we obviously picked this for today because of the closing phrase, Happy Columbus Day:

WWOZ Festing In Place 2023 Starts Today

When Covid shut down the world, WWOZ started Festing In Place to bring the magical music of New Orleans to a world that needed it. The program was so successful they have kept it going. 

This years version is starting today and running all weekend as WWOZ digs into their live show vault for more amazing music.  Here is the lineup for the next few days (times CST):

Live Review: Tedeschi Trucks Band - MSG 9/29/23

The second of two "garden parties" thrown by the Tedeschi Trucks Band took place last Friday night at Madison Square Garden as the rock and soul group pulled into town, playing the World's Most Famous Arena for the first time in their long career. The group brought some special guests along to commemorate the special evening, which lived up to the billing, as the sold out crowd braved epic flooding earlier in the day all throughout NYC to attend. 

Opening the event was Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real as their southern based soulful rock was an excellent compliment as fans filled in early to catch their set. The group reached their zenith with a fluid extended take on "Find Yourself" but no Lady Gaga duet emerge on this night, while "Set Me Down On A Cloud" showcased organ work and a soaring guitar while the finale of "Something Real" displayed bluesy southern rock with lap steel guitar. 

The 12 piece Tedeschi Trucks Band took to the stage next as the large rock/blues/soul revue got it going with "Anyhow". The slower soul opener was spearheaded by Susan as she sang lead and delivered a ripping lead solo before the cool "Playing With My Emotions" which had a huge build from Derek as the band swelled behind his riffs. "Ain't That Something" was highlighted by the horns, specifically the trombone solo, while the first extended jams of the night occurred next as "Part Of Me" with a slow intro from Trucks, a soulful groove which highlighted the backing vocals, before a extended drum duel and sax solo. 

Mike Mattison then stepped up to the front of the stage to take on lead vocals for the groups cover of The Rolling Stones "Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)" which was revved up and well received. The band then stretched out again as "I Am The Moon" and "Pasaquan" flowed into each other and ranged all over the sonic map lead by Trucks, who delivered a huge crescendo to end these instrumental excursions.

The first special guest came out with just Susan Tedeschi as Nora Jones played electro-keys and sang a simple duet, a cover of John Hiatt's "Have a Little Faith in Me", before the full band returned to pump out a rocking cover of Tom Petty's "You Wreck Me" which was a mid set highlight.  

The smooth soul of "Midnight in Harlem" gave the band a spacey, swirling excursion that focused on the sax before the energy picked up for the stomping "Made Up My Mind". The group then moved the night into various covers and all of them were played with grace and energy as John Prine's "Angel of Montgomery" was expertly sung by Tedeschi, who also dropped in a short "Sugaree" tease before Trey Anastasio was introduced.   

Trey split lead vocals with Susan as the outfit delivered a killer take on The Who's "The Seeker" which featured a three way guitar vamping to end which was invigorating. The group then delivered back to back Derek and the Dominoes covers with Trey leading "Bell Bottom Blues" and Lukas Nelson joining for "Layla" which was mammoth as four guitarists kept the song soaring around piano break and horns; an apt set closer to a large night of tunes. 

Things were not over yet though as Susan and Lukas started the encore off with another duet, this time a cover of Leon Russell's "A Song For You" which was heartfelt. After "Soul Sweet Song" the party kicked up with an extended Sly and The Family Stone medley which touched on "Sing A Simple Song" and " I Want To Take You Higher" as all the guests joined and the rock/soul/funk banged out with abandon. 

Before the encore, the band advertised a return to the Beacon Theater for March of 2024, that location is their usual NYC haunt, and this unique Garden Party was a break from the norm which turned out to be a well organized and played event; a reward for a very trying (and wet) day for New Yorkers.

Dylan Cover #600 Guns N' Roses "Knockin' on Heaven's Door"

 In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a cover by Guns N' Roses  playing "Knockin' On Heaven's Door'"

Thoughts on Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover of this tune:
The song that seems to have been covered by every and any one, but when originally recorded it it was featured on one of Dylan's oddest releases yet. A straight ahead mournful number that just seems to work somehow and like a lot of Dylan tunes has grown beyond it's humble beginning. The song is really a testament to his amazing songwriting which can seem simple at times. The tune has invaded culture (possibly because of all the covers) and I would wager it is one of Dylan's most widely known tunes...

C'mon man, they are GnR, the one LA rock outfit to come out of the 80's and earn everyone's respect. Legends. 

Thoughts on Cover:

This was a monstrous cover that was everywhere when GnR were the biggest band in the world...or at least on MTV when that mattered.  When we hit these big round numbers we like to try to get a cover worthy, this certainly fits the bill.
