Bat Fangs Releasing New Record, Queen Of My World, Title Track Out Now

Betsy Wright on guitar and vocals, and drummer Laura King are back as Bat Fangs and their newest album Queen Of My World will be out next month on Don Giovanni Records.

The duo who play in Ex Hex and Mac McCaughn and Speed Stick respectively, will release this, their second album on October 29th. 

The title track and cool video can be heard/viewed below. RtBE are looking forward to this full length release. 

Brooklyn Bowl Philadelphia Opens November 4th with Soulive and George Porter Jr.

One of the best live venues in the nation keeps expanding as Brooklyn Bowl will soon open their newest location in Philadelphia. 

The lineup is also set for the Grand Opening on November 4th with Soulive and George Porter Jr. kicking open the doors. The lineup for the first few months is stacked as expected:

When the bands co-front man Patterson Hood makes the statement "The Live at Plan 9 recording is the best recording I have ever heard of the 2001-2006 version of the Drive-By Truckers" you take notice. A band who has gone through various iterations, DBT have made their bones by non-stop touring and leaving it all on the stage. More recent incarnations of the band have produced some amazing live albums, and while Plan 9 Records July 13, 2006 is not up to It's Great To Be Alive's heights, some fans may cherish it more as it includes the amazing talents of Jason Isbell. 

There is no doubting the bands studio records from this time are their strongest with three songwriters and this live show, a benefit for The Harvey Foundation in Plan 9 Records for only a few hundred fans, captures the rock outfit clicking on all cylinders. The twenty five song set keeps pumping out classic DBT fare as each song gets varying levels of raw rock, country heartache and twangy folk. 

Opening with the pedal steel lead of John Neff on "Tales Facing Up" the harmonies Isbell and Shonna Tucker brought in are evident from the get go, overflowing into "One of These Days". The band eases into the rock with some honky-tonk on "Aftermath USA" and a slowed down "Gravity's Gone" while the swaying "Why Henry Drinks" must have gotten the glasses raised all around the record store on this night. 

Two early highlights are Hood's advice giving, life loving ode "World of Hurt" and Isbell's fatherly tips of "Outfit", both ringing honest and true. Later on "Shut Up And Get On The Plane" and "Let There Be Rock" are raucous vibrating with energy propelled by drummer Brad Morgan. Mike Cooley's "Zip City" rips around the three guitar attack while Isbell's duo of "Goddamn Lonely Love" and "Decoration Day" are stunners. The finale "Lookout Mountain" revved up the room ending on a super high peak of metallic wailing and wah wah pedals as the guitars fire out into the ethos.  

There are some missteps like any full on live show, "Marry Me" gets a bit wonky after a fun breakdown and "The Day John Henry Died" and "Wednesday" chug along yet never elevate, but overall this collection of mid era Truckers is dynamite. The groups heartfelt cover of The Rolling Stones "Moonlight Mile" is worthy on it's own, never before being officially released by the Truckers.  

The band was paid a case of PBR and two bottles of whiskey to play this show and the results speak for themselves as Hood states, "It was by far our favorite show of the year and all these years later, I think it is one of the best performances from that era of the band". Hard to argue against that.

Fugees To Reunite, Tour for 25th Anniversary of The Score

1996 was pretty much ruled by one album, the Fugees debut release, The Score. You could not go anywhere, at least in downtown New York City, and not hear it, it was a cultural phenomenon. Next year, to celebrate 25 years since its release, the Fugees are reuniting and doing a world tour.

Dylan Cover #497 Turtlefoot Band "Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window" Live

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a cover by Turtlefoot Band performing "Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?" 

Thoughts on Original:
(From the first time in this series we tackled a cover of this song)
A rambling transitional tune from Dylan as he moved from folk to his rock phase backed by The Hawks and push that wild thin mercury sound which Dylan was just starting to dabble in. Perhaps because of it's rarity, not appearing on any official album it is always a joy to listen to when it pops up, but there are better tracks in this vein such as the unfinished "She's Your Lover Now" but that is a whole separate post....

This is the first time we are hearing Turtlefoot Band, but they seemed to do a whole night of Dylan Covers so they may show back up here again. While the audio on the recording is not professional, the actual playing, performance and especially the vocals are all top notch. This is a well done cover of a rare Dylan tune which makes for a great listen.

Nugs.net Add The Hold Steady, Ziggy Marley and More

RtBE can remember downloading random fun shows from nugs.net Free Stash back in the day. There were some killer Grateful Dead and Phish shows, plus a random sampling of Black Crowes, Robert Randolph and others. Now it has evolved into one of the best live streaming sites and more. 

Recently they announced the addition of three new acts who RtBE enjoys, The Hold Steady, Ziggy Marley and King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard. 

The site already has some amazing artists on it and is only growing larger and better with time and new artists. To celebrate, here are tunes from each of the new additions. 

Don Giovanni Records to Release Winterhawk Out of Print Discography

One of RtBE's favorite record labels Don Giovanni is releasing the 1970's Indigenous hard rock band Winterhawk's two album discography in a month. 

The band drew comparisons to KISS and Thin Lizzy back in the day and you can check out their tune "Custers Dyin" below.

Album Review: Ali Awan - Moon Mode

The newest release from the Philadelphia, PA based Ali Awan falls between an EP and full length at six songs and while describing the length can be tricky, describing the musical goodness presented on Moon Mode is not. Awan delivers the slick rock goods with cool grooves, expressive experimentation and loads of indie pop flair. 

Opening with the title track Awan's relaxed vocals become breathy around a hip beat and laid back yet  pulsing low end supported in fairly straight ahead fashion before tape loops and a large expansive outro push the song into cosmic orbit. The hits keep coming as the percussion and bass driven "Dogs of Fire" has a light Beck flair while the hypnotic flowing "Sticky Sneakers" brings a Beatlesque feeling from the background to the swirling forefront. 

The best of the bunch just may be "Climb" which pushes indie pop to catchy heights with a great guitar riff and beat that could be used in multiple commercials with ease while getting stuck in your head for days. Less successful is the warbling "Run With You" which never breaks out into the jam hinted at dragging over the five minute run time. 

The brief record (or long EP) wraps up on a poppy stroll with "Cherry Pits", skipping and shuffling along with breezy ease to close. Ali Awan's knack for catchy sounds, relaxed delivery and odd flourishes make Moon Mode seem elegant and simple, a fun trick indeed.

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by The Midnight Sol playing "She Belongs To Me"

Thoughts on Original:
The first song in this series was a different cover of this track, here is what I wrote about it then and still feel the same way:
This is a gem of a song, a twisted tale that entwines beauty and deceit, darkness and sparkling Egyptian Red Rings.  One of Dylan's best in it's mystery, elusiveness and bitter biting undertones; really pure Dylan and one of his all time classics.  Loved it when I first heard it, still love it today.

New Video from Muck and the Mires, "Good Enough"

The newest single and video from the Boston based garage rockers Muck and the Mires arrives today.

It is titled "Good Enough" and you can watch it below. The song and 1860's inspired video comes off the bands most recent release, Greetings From Muckingham Palace on Dirty Water Records. The full album can be accessed via their bandcamp page.  

Gov't Mule to Release New Album, Heavy Load Blues, Unveil Title Track

Gov't Mule has a new album on the way. The blues based Heavy Load Blues will be the next offering from the outfit. 

While the band has always played blues based rock and roll, this is being described as their first true blues effort by main Mule himself Warren Haynes. The record will show off the bands original offerings next to covers by Tom Waits, The Howlin’ Wolf, Elmore James, Junior Wells, Ann Peebles, Bobby “Blue” Bland and the Animals.

RtBE have always enjoyed the Mule live, and have really dug Warren's solo offerings (and his solo live shows) but it has been quite a few years since we have been excited for a Mule studio offering. The excellent title exudes high hopes for the fall release which you can pre-order here.
