Full Show Friday: Simon and Garfunkel - The Concert In Central Park 1981

Last year we searched the murky back waters of youtube to find full concerts and posted them to the site monthly.  That was all well and good but this year RtBE is upping the ante with a show every week to celebrate Full Show Friday's.  These shows are of varying quality and may not be here for long so enjoy them while you can...As always, please support the artist every which way, but especially by seeing them live (if they are still playing)...Today, Simon & Garfunkel!!!

With the Summer Stage season kicking off next week we wanted to post one of the best summer shows we have ever heard, Simon & Garfunkel's Concert In Central Park from 1981. This is professionally shot and recorded and can be bought here if you want to own this glorious show. We have seen some cool shows in Central Park, but this one is pretty amazing, and reminds me how great these guys were.  Timeless songs, flawless harmonies, this night had it all.

Highlights include "America" which is as pure of a song as there is, the upbeat "Me & Julio Down By the Schoolyard", the "Kodachrome/Maybellene" combo, the poetic "April Come She Will"and the funky "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover".  Enjoy:

Sazerwrap Part 1: The Food

The Sazerwrap has been RtBE way of rounding up all the amazing things that happen down at our annual trip to Jazzfest in New Orleans.  This year we will breaking the review up into two parts, Food and Music, today is the food.  Only 11 Months until next years festival!

Every year it gets harder and harder to put into words how amazing the NOLA Jazzfest experience is. From the amazing friends whose numbers keep expanding to the all night raging to the music and food that just melts your brain and clogs your heart...Things are pretty much magical in that town.

Today we will talk about the calorie inducing portion of the trip, the tasty eats that NOLA is famous for. Each year seems to up the ante on the restaurants we hit and the great variety and quality of the grub and cocktails.

Album Review: Shannon and the Clams -Dreams In The Rat House

Shannon and the Clams
Dreams In The Rat House
**** out of *****

The retro trio from Oakland known as Shannon and the Clams have put out a few albums of garage rocking tunes but Dreams In The Rat House is their first release for the consistently intriguing Hardly Art label. The first thing that instantly jumps out is the production/lo-fi appeal of this album, sounding straight out of 1958 the texture, fuzz and aura are all top notch adding to the overall excellent sound of the songs.

Caught somewhere in the vortex of Doo-Wop/Garage Rock/Rockabilly/Punk the trio (Shannon Shaw, Cody Blanchard, Ian Amberson) seem to play with all the genre's easily and with real heart.  At times they can sound like a lightweight version of The Oblivians ("Bedrock" and "Rat House") while others they are prime candidates for the Phil Spector Ronettes or Crystals treatment ("Into A Dream").

Disk opener "Hey Willy" sets the perfect tone with it's jangle guitar lines, muffled vocals, background screeches and thumping drums. The first single "Rip Van Winkle"  takes the sleeping story to a tambourine shaking high with its 50's rock energy sparseness.

Other album highlights are "Ozma" with it's thumping tom drums and twinkling guitar lines, the lament laden "In The River" and the dustbowl sounding gem "Heads or Tails" which talks lovingly about Hobo's sippin' Rye and sleepin' under the stars.

Not everything is perfect, a track like "Unlearn" is over four minutes of a one note trick that gets stale fast, but the pure feel and passion injected into the album wins in the end.  Dreams In The Rat House is retro in all the right ways.

Full Show Friday: Gov't Mule 5-18-13 Hangout Music Festival

Last year we searched the murky back waters of youtube to find full concerts and posted them to the site monthly.  That was all well and good but this year RtBE is upping the ante with a show every week to celebrate Full Show Friday's.  These shows are of varying quality and may not be here for long so enjoy them while you can...As always, please support the artist every which way, but especially by seeing them live (if they are still playing)...Today, Gov't Mule!!!

Easily our most timely Full Show Friday, with this set taking place less then 1 week ago! Gov't Mule used to be big favorites amongst RtBE but we will admit in recent years we have skipped their shows more often then seeing them, but we will always love Warren Haynes.  His playing and voice are two of our favorites in rock and roll.  This is our first time peeping Jorgen Carlsson on bass and he seems a natural fit and the Pro-Shot, Pro-Sound is top f'ing notch all around.

Here is a chance to catch the most recent incarnation of the group from the comfort of your desk...but I gotta say those beach shots make this Festival seem like something worth checking out in person. With the Holiday weekend upon us, maybe some beach time is in order...

Highlights include Danny Louis funky keys in "Lola Leave Your Light On" and the old school closing run of "Soulshine" "I'm A Ram" "Thorazine Shuffle" and the burning closer of "Mule". RIP Woody.

Enjoy:

Album Review: Torches -If People Stare EP

Torches
If People Stare EP
*** out of *****

This is a trio of indie rockers from LA (not to be confused with the roots group from DC we reviewed in 2010) that know how to paint shimmering songs with soaring vocals and electric guitar loops. Their newest EP is If People Stare and the 4 tracks here all have an upbeat pop sensibility you would expect from an LA group while there seems to be a bit of angst just below the surface that adds to the tracks.

It can be noticed distinctly on the first song "When You Gonna".  At first brush it seems just like another love song about a pair of disjointed lovers with Ohh's and Aah's but paying attention to the lyrics adds emotinal depth concerning the death of a relationship.  The fuzzed up guitar outro helps as well; a really cool track.

Bass player (who has since left the group) Bridgette Moody adds gorgeous background vocals to the title track while "Watch You Like a Hawk" has a west coast The National vibe. "In My Sleep" is an uptempo hand clapper that ends this short EP on an energetic note that is sure to get the crowd up dancing in the live setting.

Solid production and expert sound add to the overall effort. The 4 tracks come in at 13 minutes but it is clearly worth a listen with a combo of gnat like guitars, direct drums and most importantly solid songs.

Album Review: JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound -Howl

JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound
Howl
*** out of *****

If Want More was this Chicago based retro-soul groups party album then Howl is the heartbreak filled follow up. The slick funk and anything goes vibe are replaced with much more scaled down grooves by The Uptown Sound and lyrics from Brooks that let you know he has dealt with some major issues in his love life.

The word sparse kept coming up over and over again while listening to Howl, whether it was the opening title track or the piano based bleakness of "Cold", minimalism seems to be a goal here. The hurt on "Married For A Week" seeps through, even the first uptempo track "Before You Die" places love in much more crucial situation, needing to get an admirers number before they die.

The bands take on 70's Sly and the Family Stone era soul/funk is scaled back but tracks like "Rouse Yourself" and "Security" get in that mood, the latter even tosses in some disco elements. "River" is a slow torch song that lets Brooks vocals shine and he makes the most of it. Also on the positive side are "Ordinary" with its deep fuzzy bass paired with rising strings and the arena rocking "Control"; when this band adds more and more to the stew tasty results usually follow.

More mature, if less fun, Howl shows the retro-soul showman evolving into something new. While there are certainly growing pains ("Not Alone" sounds completely out of place), there are also bright spots (the swelling disk closer "These Things") and hopefully Brooks and his sound stick around to evolve some more.

_____________________________________________________________________
We have been digging on JC Brooks & The Upown Sound for a while now.  We were blown away by them at Mass MOCA and dug their first album for Bloodshot Records. This one threw us for a loop, it is a definite departure in tone from their last disk, and while we always love when artists try something new this one seems a bit depressing overall, something this kind of music isn't always that great for.  Anyway, production and sound are all solid and the good tracks are really good.

Album Review: Pinata Protest -El Valiente

Pinata Protest
El Valiente
***and1/2 out of *****

Combining Norteno and Ranchera music with punk rock may not sound like an easy fit but the San Antonio based Pinata Protest make it seem as if the genres were always linked. On their new album El Valiente the group has a fun time quickly (the whole disk is under 25 minutes) working their way through Mexican flavored tunes in a Texas punk way.

Beginning with an electro-sounding intro that seems styled after a boxer introduction the group dives into mixing languages and styles successfully on "Vato Perron". "Life On the Border" focuses heavily on the accordion play and lyrically discusses the issues facing Mexican-American youth living in that area. "Tomorrow, Today" is a waltzing two-step while "Guadalupe" plays like a straight up rock tune that just happens to feature and accordion.

The title track recalls another genre twisting band at their peak, Sublime.  With it's speed and changes "El Valiente" has touches of the So-Cal groups "Date Rape" in there as well as other bits and pieces from the band.

Pinata Protest also decided to tackle two staples of their sound/heritage with a speedy run through of "La Cucaracha" and "Volver, Volver" which really works well. Playing with a classic like "Volver, Volver"and adding that vibrant punk rock feel and power (via a crushing ending) is the perfect snapshot of this band with one foot in tradition and the other stampeding forward.

"Que Pedo" ends the disk with a quick burst of straight up punk rock making the whole thing feel like it is over too fast, but what a fun ride.

_______________________________________________________________________
Dug the album just kind of wish there was more.  Playing like an extended EP, El Valiente is a good intro into the Pinata Protest sound, here's hoping they make it to NYC so we can catch these suckers live as that is where they really seem to flourish.

Dylan Cover #88 X-Ray Imij "All Along The Watchtower"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a cover by X-Ray Imij doing "All Along The Watchtower"
Thoughts on Original:
There are certain songs we are surprised we missed cover versions of in the Bard's back catalog...but "All Along The Watchtower" isn't one of them.  There is a reason we haven't covered a cover version (confusing). As Wilson mentioned in his post back in cover #44 there is only 1 true version of this song...and that is Mr. Jimi's. We wouldn't have touched on another cover of this, but the band X-Ray Imij reached out to us recently so we wanted to focus on their live take today.
Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
These South Jersey fellows are a Jimi Hendrix Tribute Band and we are happy to shine the spotlight on them today.  The trio of Ray Gervato, Jeff Summerton, and Mitch Phillippe play some spot on Experience covers. You can keep track of their doings here.
Thoughts on Cover:
In the vein of Hendrix (obviously) the group is captured live here at The Hard Rock Cafe in AC rocking out on the all-time great tune. Starting off a bit sped up things quickly find their groove as the axe slings and the rhythm locks in. The tone of the guitar is spot on (proof Hendrix sounds just as "far out" today) and the interplay amongst the trio jams hard.  Nice work fellas, their next show is June 15th in Woodstown, NJ if you are in the mood for some Hendrix.

Full Show Friday: John Fogerty - Live in LA 9-15-2005

Last year we searched the murky back waters of youtube to find full concerts and posted them to the site monthly.  That was all well and good but this year RtBE is upping the ante with a show every week to celebrate Full Show Friday's.  These shows are of varying quality and may not be here for long so enjoy them while you can...As always, please support the artist every which way, but especially by seeing them live (if they are still playing)...Today, John Fogerty!!!

With his legal troubles behind him John Fogerty finally got to perform the songs he actually wrote (what a novel idea) on his Long Road Home Tour. The man is chock full of great rock tunes, dipping into Country, Americana, Delta Swamp Blues and anywhere else he wants too. With a whip-crack tight band (John Molo on drums from Phil and Friends days keeps it all moving and I am pretty that Bass player is Tig from SOA) he powers through all the hits and some newer ones.  With a new album due out in a few weeks we figured we would revisit the classics.

This is professionally recorded and shot, you can buy it here (I think the director is a bit cut happy) after you watch/listen to it today. As for highlights, just look at the setlist, they are all highlights, Creedance! Jump in and enjoy:

Album Review: Courtney Jaye -Love and Forgivness

Hey All,

Got a new review up on Glide

Read it right C'here!!!

It is of Courtney Jaye's newest release Love and Forgiveness.(Two things we can all use more of)

The now residing in Nashville singer has crafted a solid album of the pop/country/Americana mixture variety.  Her quote that I used in the review kind of says it all. Fans of that late lush seventies pop sound will certainly dig it.

Support Courtney Jaye here (we noticed the review is already up on the site), buy the album here, and peep some samples below:

You Know What the Date and Time Are?

Out of My Brain........

We haven't touched much on Quadrophenia on the blog but anyone who knows me or Wilson (who contributes and edits sporadically) has heard us go on (at length) about the greatness of this album.

We even went to see The 2 Who (they aren't close to the original band) with Hottub and Jeff this Feburary when the tour rolled into AC.  What better place to go to hear Quad then by the Sea and Sand?

We didn't review the show because we could have written a book about the experience. It wasn't all roses but it was pretty god damn monumental personally for us. More will probably be recapped down the road regarding that, but for NOW on 5/15 at 5:15 please play that song up there as loudly as humanly possible and enjoy...

Album Review: Haunted West -Postlude

 Haunted West
Postlude
** out of *****

It is tough to pin down Haunted West’s sound on their first full length album Postlude.  The brain child of Mark Grande with his friends from Wooster, Ohio (as well as other special guests) backing him up, the group seems to be of two minds.

A combo of lyrically focused dark pop tunes with jamband enriched musical changes that don’t always work together when combined in the individual songs. When the band weird's things out the most, like on the disk opener “Skinny Walker” (with guests Skerik, Mike Dillon and Sam Bass) the best results are found. Disk closer “Lodebhar” also lets its freak flag fly; these two tracks are clear disk highlights.

There is a sense of despair/lost love on the whole album but particularly tunes like “Don’t Go Towards The Light”, “I’m Sorry”, “She Haunts Me”, “Empty House” and “Waiting For The End”. Like the songs themselves Grande’s lyrics are straight ahead and vocally he is reminiscent of Lee Ranaldo without the poetry. The most interesting elements of these conventional pop tunes are the times when odd sounds appear out of nowhere; not the lyrical pain Grande is trying to convey. Straight ahead doesn't work as well for the group.

Production and tone sounds ripe and rich as the disk progresses.  As the band continues to play with their style and strong points (particularly their experimentation) they could produce some interesting results in the future, Postlude as a whole is a shaky first step.

Dylan Cover #87 OHG "Envuelto en Tristeza (Tangled Up In Blue)"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. This week we have OHG, doing an acoustic cover of "Tangled Up In Blue".

Thoughts on Original:
From our original take on the tune-
Have we really gotten to #58 on the Dylan cover list and not touched one cover of "Tangled Up In Blue"?!?  Wow.  The song that never ends, the tune that might just best sum up Dylan and we waited this long.  Well it just goes to show you how many great tunes he has.  Dylan constantly toyed with this song (check out the Rolling Thunder and Real Live version's if you haven't yet) and even he knows it can't stay stagnant in one form for long, so covering it is a good bet.  Needless to say it is in the top 5 greatest songs he ever wrote if we were ranking them...hmm.
Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
I have never heard of OHG, but from checking their links and reading some comments I am inferring that they are a rock group from Argentina.
Thoughts on Cover:
Pretty cool to hear a full version of a Dylan tune in a different language. We talked about a few who toss in other languages to parts of his songs, but never one that was fully translated. Cool idea, but we are not in a space to accurately translate the words. I did find this site, but not sure it is even accurate. In reality it doesn't matter so much, it's the idea and overall tone that counts. Overall musically it doesn't stray much from the original, which is OK, but we love our covers a bit more adventurous.

Full Show Friday: Bob Marley Live 11-25-79 Santa Barbara

Well we are still recovering from the most amazing time down at Jazzfest, we hope to have few posts concerning the experience, but really it is getting harder and harder to find ways of saying how amazing everything is....if you've been you know, if you haven't you should go. Simple as that.

We figured the positive vibes of a pure legend were needed today, so we went to the obvious choice, Bob Marley. We choose a show from his Survival Tour which took place in 79 because of its more laid back nature then some of our favorite early shows of Bob...we are just looking to relax today and what better place then Santa Barbara in 1979?

Having already been diagnosed with Cancer a few years earlier this would be his second to last tour, and he would be dead in just 16 months at shockingly only 36 years old. Bob is physically frailer but his playing/singing/spirit still transcends time and space like few ever have.

This is a professional recording that was officially released and you can buy it here.  You will know almost all of the tunes if you are even a casual fan but some highlights are the opening "Positive Vibrations", the raw vocal performance he puts on during "Ambush In The Night", the passion and percussion of "Them Belly Full", "Ride Natty Ride", the string of all-time classics to close and our favorite Marley tune (probably) "Exodus". Enjoy the show:

New Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings Tune: "Retreat"

After a couple of days of reviewing electro based music, we thought we would share the new single from the fantastic retro-soul outfit Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings.  The track is called "Retreat" and it has all the makings of a goody: blaring horns, fired up lyrics, stomping drums...give it a listen here...

Big up's to Daptone Records who do a great job.

The band's new album Give The People What They Want, comes out in August and we will be looking for it.You can pre-order the disk today and grab the single immediately.

Here is an older tune of SJ&TDK that we dig for your evening listening pleasure. Really great Video too...

Baseball Walk Out Songs

We love baseball here at RtBE, so when Hidden Track pointed us to a post on (of all sites) MTVHive.com that dealt with the 15 Oddest Baseball Walk-On Songs for this season we had to check it out.
This is one of our favorite conversations to have at a baseball game as it combines music and America's past time (usually with a beer in hand). We have heard some great answers, everything from deathmetal to the National Anthem to a deathmetal national anthem.

The idea of the National Anthem was a great one from Tom, saying if he was a relief pitcher he would use it so everyone would have to stand up and no one would boo him. Classic.

MtvHive's Article is OK, but it is early in the season and I don't know everyone's walk up songs yet (by a long shot). I agree with them on their AJ Pierzynski post, everyone hates Creed, and Stinkfist ain't a bad nickname for David Freese at all.

It is amusing that Lyle Overbay still uses the song that was popular (kinda) when he first got called up in 2001. This post also makes me kinda like Eric Chavez a bit more.  While Domonic Brown goes in your face, Chavez is subversive with the "Ice Cream Paint Job", I may have gone Lil' Wayne's take on the beat from No Ceilings though...

You can download that full mixtape here by the way if you don't have it and wonder why people love Wheezy.

My choice for walk up song always changes, I used to say the build up in "Run Like An Antelope" or "Raining In Blood" but I am constantly changing and am sure I will come up with a new one at the next game I attend...

Do you have one? Feel free to leave your choices in the comments...

Album Review: Classixx -Hanging Gardens

Classixx
Hanging Gardens
**and1/2 out of *****

Two DJ's who have gained popularity for remixing other artists are putting out their first album together of original material, titled Hanging Gardens. The dance music contained on the disk is smooth enjoyable and breezy; these EDM tunes ping and bounce.

Opening with the title track the layers build and swirl. Coming from LA the duo of Michael David and Tyler Blake infuse a distinct relaxed SoCal vibe that is evident from the get go; more afternoon pool lounging then late night thumping throw-downs.

Tracks like the rhythmic focused "Fax From The Beach" and "Dominoes" with it's sparkling swirls and "oh-ya" calls continue that vibe.  Guest vocalists show up to add some distinction, Nancy Whang from LCD Soundsystem adds breathy lyrics over a warbling keyboard line in "All You're Waiting For", and Jeppe shows up on the techno tinged "I'll Get You". "Long Lost" features Active Child over new wave inspired beats while "A Stranger Love" showcases Sarah Chernoff of Superhumanoids.

At times things can seem generic ("Holding On") or stick around too long dulling ("Jozi's Fire") but overall Hanging Gardens makes a solid summer soundtrack for EDM fans looking to chill out.

______________________________________________________________________
Here at RtBE we will freely admit that EDM is not our bag...pretty far from it. However, one thing though we always try to do is sample and review different music; if you ain't evolving you are rusting.

This first album from Classixx seems perfectly acceptable in the genre, will we ever personally throw this on to get down?  Probably not, but that shouldn't stop a review for fans of any music.

Album Review : Big Black Delta -Big Black Delta

Big Black Delta
Big Black Delta
**and1/2 out of *****

The solo project from Mellowdrone front man Johnathan Bates may sound like a low down blues outfit but the old timey stripped down sound couldn't be further away from the electro urges found on this self titled release.

Bates has been producing this supped up electronica for a few years now and this album comes equipped with all the bells and whistles of disco rock along with his distinct vocals.  "Into The Night" has eerie keyboard sounds and literal chimes plunking throughout.  One of the first singles "Side Of The Road" has it's dance beats cooking with a full on break smack in the middle before revving up again.

"x22" plays with electric guitar noise and spastic fits of riffs in the vein of Sleigh Bells.  That industrial tinge though is the outlier as most of these tracks are more comfortable cooling in a club then a sweaty mosh pit.

"Love You This Summer" closes the disk with some "Ooh's and Ah's" over an acoustic guitar line and drawn out electric keyboards. "Betamax" is muddled with some distortion but evokes English Beat bands of the early 80's, a period where Bates seems very comfortable. The other single "IFUCKINGLOVEYOU" has a Smith's feel from that same time period with some driving drums and angelic vocals, the best song on the disk.

As a solo project Big Black Delta lets Bates delve into his more dance happy tendencies keeping the rocking for his day project.

________________________________________________________________________
We have kept tabs on Mellowdrone since we caught them years ago at the old Knitting Factory, but we gotta admit this solo project from Bates is not really our favorite kind of music. That said if you are into electronica, give it a whirl.

Dylan Cover #86 Danny Fox "It You Gotta Go, Go Now" Live

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. This week we have Danny Fox, doing a live cover of "If You Gotta Go, Go Now".

Thoughts on Original:
A very cool tune that was unearthed on the fantastic Bootleg Series Vol 1-3.  This track is fun, playful, devious, winking, perfect Dylan.  It has the feeling of a tossed off song, but even Dylan's b-cut's are still gems and this is no exception. I also love how Bob laughs and fumbles through a few words about a dark door, very endearing...even when Bob is being creepy.
Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
I have never heard of Danny Fox before. There are a few Danny Fox's online, but I can't seem to find this other then a few youtube clips. As mentioned often (but not lately) part of the reason for this series is just finding random artists covering the Bard, and Mr. Fox seems like a fun one.
Thoughts On Cover:
Really Cool cover, straight ahead in Dylan's hometown.  Very little deviation, but not much really needed on this underplayed song. Not much more to say, enjoy this one on a recovery Monday.

While we sample Sazerac's, you should sample these

We are down in New Orleans, living the good dirty life, with that output will be pretty slow the next few days. Reminder you can listen to the fest on WWOZ.
So check out these blogs, they are over on the right hand side, but I am not sure if everyone see's them all the time.

WFMU's Icihban Soul
This blog is one I consistently love...it surprises me how good the music that they focus on makes me feel.  Everything from a young Otis Redding to Tassle Twirling this site has it all and always puts a smile on my face or a tear in my eye.  Great stuff...oh and RTBE Favorite Greg Cartwright has been known to DJ there.

Hidden Track
We hype them periodically, but Scott and crew do a great job with the blog on Glide.  Give them love and check out everything from jambands (their bread and butter) to indie rock to beer and food posts.

nyctaper
We haven't pumped them up in a bit so we will remind you...the best in live music taping here in NYC, period. They even have a KILLER recording of our pick for show of the year from last year.  You can grab that recording here.

There are tons of other ones, feel free to leave your favorites in the comments...be back soon..maybe, we just might stick around this town...

We are currently heading down (literally) to enjoy the town, but if you can't make it you can watch some videos from the NOLA Jazzfest Youtube Channel. You can also listen on one of the best radio channel's in the world, WWOZ.

Check out some of the Food Video's,  just a big a part of things as the music....

This Po'Boy Line is miles long come the 'Fest, people wait all year for this meat:

I've never tried this sausage, but their is a first time for everything:
