Album Review: Taqbir - Victory Belongs To Those Who Fight For A Right Cause

Taqbir
Victory Belongs To Those Who Fight For A Right Cause
*** out of *****

Taqbir is a punk band from Morocco who are raging against the oppressive religious society on their debut offering Victory Belongs To Those Who Fight For A Right Cause. The band is secretive about their identity because of their outspoken stances in a repressive culture.

Singing in Moroccan Arabic the outfit is fed up with the religious based, extreme patriarchal oppressive society in which they have to live. This is true punk rock as their dangerous stance could have disastrous consequences; they are playing the music for radical change.

This would not matter as much if the tunes themselves weren't as effective as they are in their raw punk style. Opener "Sma3" uses feedback and a pumped up bass line in almost industrial fashion to kick-start the short EP. The marching drums and ringing guitar propel "Aisha Qandisha" forward with power and purpose, while closer "Al-Zuki Akbar" drives everything home with groove based hardcore punk rock.

"Tfou 3lik" is the short EP's centerpiece extending almost to three minutes. It starts with a spoken word declaration before increasing the speed, focusing on screeching verses, chant along choruses slamming riffs and big breaks that inspire. A dynamite offering as the band ravages and rumbles with passion and a fierceness.

Taqbir's Victory Belongs To Those Who Fight For A Right Cause is a reminder of the visceral power of music, the feeling that honest punk rock screeds can literally change the world.

NOLA Jazz Fest Canceled, Help Support Musicians

Once again Covid-19 has canceled the United States best festival, October will no longer be a unique New Orleans Jazzfest experience.

With this cancellation the musicians are no longer getting paid for the very many gigs they would have been playing around the two festival weekends. To help out the musicians the Krewe of Red Beans is gathering donations, paying musicians and throwing small shows in New Orleans to try to offset some of the hardships.

This is a great cause, They are calling it "Fest Fest" and hopefully you can donate if possible. This is a valiant effort to try to brighten the spirits of that town which is getting crushed by the Delta variant. Here are the the Hot 8 Brass Band covering Joy Division:

It was The Dimmer Twins playing the gorgeous new-ish City Winery in Manhattan which got us to attend.  Tonight Nick Waterhouse streams live from the same place. Grab your tickets now.

Dylan Cover #492 The Black Sorrows "Silvio"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune comes from The Black Sorrows and is a cover of "Silvio"

Thoughts on Dylan Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover of this jam:
One of the bright spots on the stinker Down in The Groove, and I have always felt that this had a lot to do with Robert Hunter helping Bobby out on this one.  Co-written by Hunter with Jerry Garcia, Brent Mydland and Bobby Weir helping out on the studio recording this track feels very mid-career Grateful Dead.  It got even more so live, picking up the rollicking pace and sticking with Bob for the rest of his career, something none of the other Groove tracks managed to do.  I have always loved "Silvio" because of the Dead connection and because I caught a ripping version of it at my first, and still to this day, favorite Dylan show...
Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
This is the first time RtBE has come across The Black Sorrows. They are an Australian rock band who have done very well for themselves and have been around for a while, will have to check them out more.

Thoughts on Cover:
A very solid version that cooks. Love the added pianos and organs touches at the end as a cool touch.

Album Review: Movie Club - Fangtooth EP

Movie Club
Fangtooth EP
***and1/2 out of *****

The newest release from the Venice Beach, CA based Movie Club is an engaging instrumental EP, mixing action and bleakness. Fangtooth captures the dissonance, confusion and anger of the recent year plus with sonic paintings of emotions that run the gamut.

The duo, Jessamyn Violet (drums) and Vince Cuneo (guitar) expanded on this go around (their fifth studio offering) to include horns from Ozomatli's David Ralicke who pitched in on everything from flute, baritone and tenor saxophone (all supped up with effects) and Tim Lefebvre contributing on bass to round out the sound.

The ominous "Badlands" opens the EP and pours out as an adventure/horror cocktail; it is as if Spy Hunter morphed into a slasher video game at some point along the open road. The questioning "Underwater Highway" is shaky before the blaring of distorted horns and guitars slam home, while "Trap Door" displays a warbling that recalls the peppiest moments from Sonic Youth.

"Ghost In The Machine" is the centerpiece of this release, stretching over four minutes it uses a slow building motif which creeps forward becoming brighter and nuanced as it moves towards its dynamic finale."Slinky Fish" excitingly wraps up things on a high note with its dance groove and a beautifully weaving sax solo from Ralicke.

The brief Fangtooth is a winner as each track sets the instrumental scene. Movie Club allow the listener to fill in the emotional blanks while giving them a push in a certain rocking direction.

Dylan Cover #491 Charlie Daniels & World Outreach Worship "Gotta Serve Somebody" Live

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by  Charlie Daniels & World Outreach Worship playing "Gotta Serve Somebody"

Thoughts on Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover of this tune:
This powerful call of hell-fire and brimstone rained down from the mountaintop as Dylan proclaimed his faith proudly, and this was the first song that most of the public heard confirming the fact that Bob did indeed "Go Jesus". It is point and fact with its belief and message. You gotta serve somebody... can't be simpler then that when it comes to faith can it? The original has a driving beat and a propulsion to it that sounds urgent, but not as urgent as Bob sings, reinforcing the proclamation through his powerful lyrics and leaving no man or woman on the sidelines...he brings everyone into this spiritual battle, and whatever your beliefs it is impossible not to feel Bob is committed as he runs through the verses and chorus.

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
RtBE loves "Devil Went Down to Georgia", who doesn't?!?  Daniels actually played with Dylan as a session musician back in the day and the Marshall Tucker Band even having a few more hits of his own before his passing in 2018.

Thoughts on Cover:
A pretty solid cover that gives good vocal work and a few picking guitar breaks to enhance the passage.Nice work from an artist RtBE disagreed with a lot while he was still alive and kickin....

Album Review: MonoNeon - Basquiat & Skittles

MonoNeon
Basquiat & Skittles
***and1/2 out of *****

The newest release from the prolific MonoNeon is titled Basquiat and Skittles, a phrase celebrity fan Eddie Murphy used to describe the charismatic artist during an interview with Jimmy Kimmel. Having previously worked with Prince, MonoNeon won't be star struck by the accurate description as he makes music on his own funky terms.

The tunes are cut in the Thundercat vein, with both using bass as their primary instrument with quirky singing and fashion. Both can deliver quirky short bursts of energetic playing and freak out sound, or deeper heartfelt grooves. Opener "Life Is A Glittery Fuckery" and the closing title track both recall Thundercat's style with syrupy bass groove, light slapping drums, keyboard warbles and outlandish singing/lyrics whose absurdist texture hide pain/searching underneath the colorful external velour.

MonoNeon drops some acid and freaks out on the directly titled "The Dog Knew, Let Me Hear Mavis (Acid Trip Story)" which features Maurice Brown on trumpet. It sounds as if he could have used Brown or any friend on that night as his dog was his only true psychedelic companion around key boards and hand claps.

The rolling groove of "Love Me As You Need" is an album highlight with it's Wurlitzer and guest drummer retroPmaS who also pushes the straight groove of "I Got a Gold Chain with a Bad Name" as guest vocalist Steve Arrington hops on board for the funky ride. The slightly twisted gospel of "When I Am Weak, I AM Strong" becomes a bit repetitive but more complete efforts like "It Was Never a Struggle, It Was a Delicacy" outweigh any brief lapses from the quirky artist.

Self recorded and produced Basquiat and Skittles runs the gamut of instrumentation and sounds, letting whatever jazzy, funky, tripped out thought creeping through MonoNeon's brain to enter the frame. These odd connections work extremely over the brief runtime of the album delivering a fantastic listen.

Album Review: Yola - Stand For Myself

Hey all, got a new review up @glidemag which you can read Right C'here!!

It is of Yola's sophomore release, Stand For Myself.

This is a hell of a record and will certainly be on our year end list, just like her debut record was back in 2019. This one is even better though. Have mentioned it before, many, many, times, but Dan Auerbach has become a great producer.

This record simply sounds top notch.

A surprising late announcement (after the initial announcement) finds the best festival in America adding a first ever Wednesday to their schedule and fulfilling the dream of having The Rolling Stones play the Fairgrounds.

What a major score and RtBE will be there. We were pumped to catch them back in 2019 when they were scheduled to play and wrote about them in the Masters Series that month, but it never came to be.

Dylan Cover #490 Paul R "Million Miles" Live

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a live cover by Paul R playing "Million Miles"

Thoughts on Original:
From the first time we tackled a cover of this tune:
From the barren blues of Time Out Of Mind comes "Million Miles". While not a standout on that album, the song was prophetic, hinting at the fantastic twelve bar blues variations that would dominate his next two releases. When first heard though it doesn't jump out, just feels like yet ANOTHER solid track from the bard.

Cover:

Thoughts on Cover Artist:
Not much online about Paul R. He seems to upload live acoustic covers on his youtube channel.

Thoughts on Cover:
A fun slowed down blues tale that works very well. Nice way to kick off a week.

Remembering Jerry Garcia

On this day way back in 1942 Jerome Garcia was born and as we have done in the past we wanted to take a second to remember Jerry in the best possible way, by listening to his music.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/brentdpayne

To kick things off how about an interview with Branford Marsalis (Go Mets!) Scott Poulson-Bryant, Anthony Decurtis and others on what it was like to play with Jerry and the Grateful Dead.

In past years we have focused on full shows from The Grateful Dead (who we featured in our Master series), but this year we wanted to post a few Jerry Garcia Band songs.

Enjoy them on this great day...oh and also, Happy Birthday Meg!
