Beastie Boy Book Release and Mini Speaking Tour Starting Next Month

Mike D and Adrock are set to release Beastie Boys Book and to celebrate they will promote the release with a Live & Direct mini speaking tour.
Each night of Beastie Boys Book: Live & Direct will feature readings, conversations between Mike D, Adrock and a special guest moderator, Q&A sessions–all with a live score provided by Mix Master Mike and a brand new Beastie Boys exhibit, curated by Beastie Boys & Beyond the Streets in partnership with adidas Skateboarding. Sonos will provide the sound experience at each exhibit, playing a mixtape curated by Adrock and Mike D.

The run kicks off with two nights in NYC which will be sure to sell out as each ticket also gets a copy of the book. Tickets go on-sale Friday at noon for the Town Hall evening. To get in the mood, how about some tunes from Beasties...

Full Show Friday: Beastie Boys Nassau Coliseum 5-11-95

We search the murky back waters of youtube to find full concerts and post them to the site weekly, come back every seven days to help us celebrate Full Show Friday's. These shows are of varying quality and may not be here for long so enjoy them while you can...As always, please support the artist every which way, but especially by seeing them live (if they are still playing)...This week...Beastie Boys!

For December RtBE is having a special focus with our Full Show Friday's. This month we will showcase live shows, that we were at and also were huge influences on our musical tastes. We will also be trying to get some outside perspectives when we can. This will be a fun and personal month for us, hope you enjoy.

So it is only the second week of this series and we are already cheating technically. We were not at this nights show in Long Island, we were at the show a few weeks later at Madison Square Garden on the same tour. In doing this month's focus on shows that personally meant something to us, this had to be included because our Beastie Boy experience at the Garden was our first introduction of our next life phase, New York City.

We were just recently enrolled in NYU and were finishing up our senior year of high school about to enter the city full time when we came down with some friends and attended the concert. This was a preview, and it was a rollicking joy to behold. The Beasties themselves were a huge influence on our fashion, musical tastes and overall style. The Garden show was a trip and our trip was just beginning...

So while we are cheating a bit, you can and still should, enjoy:

Happy 30th Anniversary to The Beastie Boys Ill Communication

Happy 30th Anniversary to The Beastie Boys Ill Communication, released this day in 1994.

The Beasties were hugely influential on RtBE from everything to music to fashion and Ill Communication was a big one, hitting when we were in high school.

Full Beastie Boy Concerts! Free Downloads and Video!

Sometimes the Internet is great.  OK, a lot of the time.  In October we came across what we thought was a Youtube oddity, apparently not.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/bakameh
A few weeks back when posting about Dino Jr's new DVD I stumbled across a full concert from the NYC Hip-Hop trio the Beastie Boys from Glasgow in 1999.  RtBE has previously mentioned our high regard for this group but this was something else.

I was floored, having caught this tour back on 8-24-98 out on Long Island still think of that show as a career highlight for the band.  Touring behind their last (at the time it was just next) classic album Hello Nasty the group was energized anew with electro-beats and funky loops, but there was one huge addition.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/fabiovenni
Having Mix Master Mike on the turntables amped the groups live set to new heights as he kept them on their toes with unique changes and tunes ("Shimmy Shimmy Ya" in "Sure Shot" is just one example). He still did the best thing I have ever heard with "Tom Sawyer", and that includes whatever Rush does to it...Enough chatter though, thanks to siamesepuppy you can now watch a show from later in that tour in all it's frantic energy below:

Think that is all?  Not Even Close!  While doing a bit of research I found an amazing site that offers free Beastie Bootlegs to fans, insane!  So I can relive the 8-24-1998 show that I loved, you can get audio from this kick ass Glasgow performance or anything else you want...This site is truly a treasure trove for fans, Boosh!

And just to continue on this huge Beastie kick, how about another FULL concert on Youtube, this one from their more recent 2007 Tour when they played the Exit Festival in Serbia...Un-fucking-real.  Thanks to  Luda Zena1228 for posting:

Wow that is a lot to digest...best of luck tackle all that goodness this weekend.

New B-E-A-S-T-I-E tune, Give it a Listen!

It might not show so much today, but perhaps the most influential band in my life has been the Beastie Boys...This poster is still hanging in my childhood bedroom:
For me the high point came with Check Your Head, the combination of all musical styles was so perfect at that time of my life and opened up these ears to the craziest things.  That said it is hard to disparage in the slightest any of their releases.

Their new album, Hot Sauce Committee Part 2 comes out May 3rd
and Thanks to Rap Radar, you can hear the new opening track "Make Some Noise" ...Droooop right about now.
"Make Some Noise"

(Side Note: How awesome is it that they sampled themselves from the Pharcyde on "Intergalactic"?  I will tell how awesome...Boosh!)

And if you haven't seen this all ready...(Thanks Mike and P)

As far as "Make Some Noise"...I like it...has a funky beat...and I can BUG OUT to it.

Jesus, How young....and they have over 2000 hits, some weird people out there I tell ya, great work fellows.

Enjoy your weekend.

The Masters: The Blues - Best Studio Albums

RtBE loves listening to new music and prides itself on keeping tabs on up and coming artists but in 2019 we are also going to have a monthly spotlight on legendary artists who we really love. We are calling this series The Masters. It will focus on the best albums, live records, transcendent shows and other odd ways we appreciate the artists and their contribution to music, culture and our formation.
For March The Masters focuses on The Blues.

The first of (at least) two months in The Masters series where the focus will not just be on one particular artist; let's face it, just one couldn't cover this topic. The blues are the foundation of rock and roll and if we chose, Muddy, Hooker, Hopkins, Wolf or King (any of them) for the monthly showcase RtBE wouldn't be able to accurately capture the full scope and breath of the, at first, so simple sounding genre known as the blues.
American Blues Legends 2702730020_bearbeitet-1

By not pinning this month to a particular artist we can hopefully highlight a few of our favs and maybe start conversations about others. Also because we are focusing on the genre, their will be pieces we miss and artists we leave out, James Brown, Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix are the blues through and through to these ears, but for our purposes this month we are leaving those artists who also touch other genres out of this conversation (more on them in the future).

RtBE also owns vinyl from Charley Patton, The Mississippi Sheiks and Blind Willie McTell (not to mention the amazing American Epic Series) but they are forerunners of the genre and while vital they are not making our list, particularly because full length albums were not a thing when they were recording.

For today we are going to focus on our top five studio records when it comes to what we think when we hear "the blues". This is very tough this month as the majority of great blues men were more in the live moment or making singles which were then collected into "best of's" and box sets. Breaking the rules of "album" RtBE dabbles with a few of those here, as it is how we came into the genre. We will get to "live albums" later this month but most of these studio releases are pretty raw as well.

More then any other of this monthly showcases in The Masters series there will be disagreements with these choices and RtBE will surely leave out something grand, so if people have suggestions, thoughts, ideas, feel free to hit us up in the comments. Here are our choices for top five studio blues albums.

As always, these lists are designed to start conversations, not end them.

Album Review: The King Khan & BBQ Show- Bad News Boys

The King Khan & BBQ Show
Bad News Boys
*** out of *****
The Montreal pairing of The King Khan & BBQ Show are back with their first album in five years titled Bad News Boys. Released on the minimalist rock label In The Red the duo instantly return to their lo-fi, silly punk rock that has moments of real majesty.

The on again off again team of The King Khan (Arish Ahmad Khan) and BBQ Show (Mark Sultan) have both branched out to other multiple outfits and offerings but seem to do their best work when together. Bad News Boys showcases the groups strengths and weaknesses properly, but thankfully the good outweighs the bad.

Beginning with "Alone Again" the immediate stew of lo-fi garage punk, doo-wop singing and devil-may-care attitude wafts through the speakers. "Illuminations" is a driving number while "Kiss My Sisters Fist" starts to inject the bands humor behind some mumbled lyrical work.

There is a clear yin and yang present as three soulfully sweat offerings with passionate lead vocals ("Bye Bye Bahi", "Ocean of Love", "Never Felt Like This") are off set by 3 juvenile tracks ("D.F.O", "Snackin' After Midnight", "Zen Machines") to make it so the band never gets to serious, or really so the record never soars to the hieghts it is hinting at.

The main problem is the jokes rub raw and aren't that funny to start with. "D.F.O" stands for Diarrhea Fuck Off and is a blast of Beastie Boy punk placed right next to the sing songy sunshine tune of "We Are The Champions" the transition is too jarring.

At times you wish the band would clean up their act, both sonically and lyrically, but that may take away the scruffy charm. Tracks like "Killing The Wolfman" winningly bridges the gap between extremes and would be a fun b-movie soundtrack.

As it is though dimwitted do-wop with a side of aggressive ass shaking is what these Bad News Boys are pumping out these days and for some moments that's all you need.

NYC Summerstage Announces Lineup for 2015

Even though it is just about freezing in the Big Apple today a major sign that summer will soon be upon us arrived. SummerStage announced their full schedule:
There are one or two shows we always hit at this venue each year and expect this year will be no different with tasty treats on this list (full list for all NYC venues also below) and have seen everyone from the Beastie Boys to Phil Lesh (and Crew)to Manu Chao at the Rumsey Playfield in Central Park.

We are looking at some shows that can hopefully match those gems. Click on the Read More Tab for the full list sorted by genre.

Full Show Friday: Joe Russo Almost Dead 1/12/18 Capital Theatre

We search the murky back waters of youtube to find full concerts and post them to the site weekly, come back every seven days to help us celebrate Full Show Friday's. These shows are of varying quality and may not be here for long so enjoy them while you can...As always, please support the artist every which way, but especially by seeing them live (if they are still playing)...This week...Joe Russo's Almost Dead!
Some months our Full Show Friday's will focus on specific artistsyearsvenues, festivals or some combo of it all. This month we focus on the gorgeous Capital Theatre over the years.

The Capital Theatre in Port Chester, NY was a popular stomping ground throughout the 70's and 80's for musicians with a sprinkling during the early 90's tossed in. It was refurbished by Peter Shapiro and opened again in 2012 with a Bob Dylan concert to re-christen the venue to rock and roll once again.

RtBE has caught some great shows since the venue reopened and will be going to more in the near future. This month the focus for Full Show Friday's will be on some of the dynamite shows throughout the "Cap's" history.

We are closing the month with a beast of a show, the full night of Joe Russo's Almost Dead from earlier this year up at the Cap. Not much to say as anytime JRAD play it is an amazing night of music, updating Grateful Dead tunes with palpable energy, sprinkling in a few other songs and jamming out with the best of them. (It is a good weeks for fans of the Dead here at RtBE check out our Rose Grove Band live review as well)

Another Cool Beastie Boys Mini Movie - "Don't Play No Game That I Can't Win"

The Beasties have always been up on mutli-formatting their tunes, the were MTV staples back in the day with "Fight For Your Right" and were doing enhanced CD's back in the 90's.  A few months back they released an extended video for "Make Some Noise" that was chock full of A-List stars and wild throwbacks to their youth.
That video was directed by MCA himself, looks like a few songs off the new album will be getting this treatment.  This time they got back together with the uber-talented director Spike Jonze who (amongst a shit load of other hip stuff) constructed the B'Boys fantastic "Sabotage" video.

The song for this journey is "Don't Play No Game That I Can't Win" with Santigold guesting and you can peep the full 11+ minute video here:

A list of things I dig in the video:
Doll Crowd Surfing
Over Enthusiastic Knife Maiming
Yeti-Copter!!!
MCA Clutching a Teddy Bar
Solo D
and the complete Thunderbirds on a nickel budget:

Still don't know if it is much of a song, but the video was entertaining.

Full North Mississippi All-Star Concerts! Video!

So this is starting to become a pleasant habit.  Early this year it was the Beastie Boys, last year it was Phish, now it is the North Mississippi All-Stars.  A couple of weeks ago we posted our review of the NMAS Brooklyn Bowl show, well while looking for some video we found these two treats.  While not as professionally shot as the Beasties they are still more then listenable.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/memestate
The first is from the night before we caught them in April 2012.  Turn your sound up as the volume is low but otherwise the video is fine, you can watch the full show right there:
Part1

Part 2

The next is a better video, sound is perfect except again very low volume wise, so turn it up.  Playing a car show?  Sure why not... just looks weird to see big Chew in a tie!

And the final show is my favorite it is a NMAS Duo show from Amoeba Records in San Fransisco

That enough low down electric blues to keep you happy?  Hope so...If not go here to the internet archives for more North Mississippi All-Stars Free Downloads.  Now that's gotta be enough!

Best American "Rock" Bands Part 2

Before last weekend, I pointed out a list that Gibson Guitars created to get people fired up while the company showcased their version of the "50 Greatest American Rock Bands".  The full list is now reveled and you can see it here
I can argue with their list, but I can't argue with their guitars...

I don't want to re-hash my issues from the last post, I just want to take a moment to go over a few snubs that I am not surprised this company missed.  In thinking about this you need to take into account influence, longevity, popularity and a bunch of other stuff, but in the end it comes down to personal preference. Their list isn't horrible, it's also not great.   I decided to focus this post on 5 bands who I think need to be in the conversation, and two that were ranked waaay to low for my tastes.  Here are the 5 who should have been on the list or at least in the conversation, in no particular order:

Full Show Friday: They Might Be Giants, Kennedy Center 10/2/12

Last year we searched the murky back waters of youtube to find full concerts and posted them to the site monthly.  That was all well and good but this year RtBE is upping the ante with a show every week to celebrate Full Show Friday's.  These shows are of varying quality and may not be here for long so enjoy them while you can...As always, please support the artist every which way, but especially by seeing them live (if they are still playing)...This week...They Might Be Giants!
Let's cleanse the palette after last Friday with some good ol' family friendly rock now....

So last weekend I had a hankering for some good old school TMBG. This band along with Sonic Youth, Public Enemy, the Beastie Boys and tons of Hardcore/Punk bands got me through those murky years. TMBG is like a weird mind control drug for me, I hadn't heard them literally for 5-6 years until this weekend and when I started listening to Lincoln I knew every word like it was 1992 all over again. Their first 4 albums are ingrained (like a birdhouse) in my soul.

So here are the oddballs playing a fancy show at the Kennedy Center from 2010. I will admit to falling off heavily from this band when they actually became a band at John Henry, Apollo 18 was my last fling with the John's. I moved on, they did too but we will always have their early years. This show has a good selection of older jams including probably me favorite tune to open. Granted this isn't my favorite version but god damn I love "She's An Angel". Other highlights, "The Guitar", the amazing "Fingertips" whirlwind so cool live, "Your Racist Friend" and "Istanbul",

Pro-Shot, Pro-Sound, give it a geeky listen, set list below, Enjoy:

Setlist
She's an Angel
Clap Your Hands
The Guitar (The Lion Sleeps Tonight)

Stream The New Beastie Boy Album

Straight from the 3 MC's Facebook page:
Good people, unfortunately due to circumstances beyond our control, the "clean" version of our new album, The Hot Sauce Committee pt 2 has leaked.

So as a hostile and retaliatory measure with great hubris we are making the full explicit aka filthy dirty nasty version available for streaming on our new site. We hope this brings much happiness, hugs, and harmony.

Enjoy Kikoos for life!

Thank you

2013 Jazzfest Acts: Annnounced Tomorrow, Predicted Tonight

Well "predicted" may be a bit strong, no research is really going into this, perhaps wish list would be a more accurate title.  The 2013 New Orleans Jazzfest will announce it's roster of artists tomorrow, which is pretty exciting as it confirms spring is just around the corner.

RtBE polled some of our Sazerwrapping Regulars who join us on our annual trip to the Big Easy to see who they would like to catch perform at the Fairgrounds this year.  Let find out what they say...

Dinosaur Jr. Free Download! Bug Live DVD out next week

The thunderous noise rock trio Dinosaur Jr. hasn't announced any more live shows yet this year, but the band is going to be releasing their new Live DVD captured last year on their Bug tour.

The Beastie Boys did something like this a few years ago with their concert film Awesome; I Fuckin' Shot That! RtBE was actually at the one day premier of this film in Union Sq when the Beasties themselves came out and answered some questions, which was pretty cool.  The film itself however was straight up weaksauce.   Things were very amateur and scattered which is part of the reasoning going into this, but I haven't watched it since that day in the theater because of these flaws.  Quite honestly the filming itself from some of the 50 camera people could have been fine, but the spastic editing ruined a decent concept, take a peak:

Back to Dino though, filming in a the small 9:30 Club in DC will probably lend itself to less running around by the crew; lets be honest the rock trio move a hell of a lot less then the Beasties do.  I am sure the band won't let out anything with crappy sound, so as long as levels are OK (which could be tricky with feed back) I am willing to give it a shot.  It comes out next week, and you can pre-order the DVD with some nifty posters, T-shirts and other gear here

Also as an added bonus here is a Free MP3 Download of the classic "No Bones" from the DVD in advance, just slap in your email address to receive the link...pretty nifty huh?
