The newest vinyl offering from the fantastic Tipitina's Record Club is of Johnny Adams After All The Good Is Gone, originally released in 1978 on Ariola Records. The music is presented on heavyweight 180g gold colored vinyl with linear notes regarding Adams music for this release and beyond, written by multi-Grammy winning producer Scott Billington.

The brief new EP from the Vicenza, Italy based rockers Jaguero is a blast of upbeat indie/punk/rock that feels bigger than the tight confines that Worst Weekend Ever is constrained in. 

It opens with the mostly restrained "Sunday", playing like a mix of Surfer Blood and Beach Slang as the group eases into the EP before halfway through the slamming drums, sing-along ready lyrics enter, only for the song to end before two minutes run time.

Happy 50th Anniversary to Miles Davis - On The Corner

Today On the Corner from Miles Davis turns fifty. 

The last studio album of the seventies (and it was only 1972!) that Davis had a conceptual idea throughout executed. This was also his last major studio record that wasn't a mishmash of sessions, outside of his 80's comeback. For the rest of the decade Miles focused on live playing (which resulted in some of our favorite albums) until his health and drug use sidelined him. 

When RtBE wrote about Miles for our Masters series, On the Corner didn't receive a lot of love, but we dig this album and era of Miles more and more over the years, so we wanted to celebrate this records anniversary today. 

The best way to do that is get down to it, here are some tunes from 1972's On The Corner.

Dylan Cover #551 Nathan Salsburg & Joan Shelley "Dark Eyes"

In this ongoing Monday Series we will be exploring various artists versions of Bob Dylan song's. Today's tune is a cover by Nathan Salsburg & Joan Shelley playing "Dark Eyes"

This month we are doing another special focus in RtBE's Dylan Covers series. In the past we have highlighted The Byrds, Coulson-Dean-McGuiness-Flint, The Hollies, Joan Osbourne, Mountain, Betty LeVette , Reggae Covers and many more.

This month we highlight Dylan...Revisited for a full month of Dylan Covers.

Thoughts on Original:

From the first time we tackled a cover of this tune:
"Dark Eyes" is the sparse album closer on the mixed bag Empire Burlesque. That record has lots of interesting songs, but falls into that dreaded period called "the '80's". The production was modern at the time and almost instantly sounded dated. The bootleg release Springtime in New York rescues a lot of these songs, showing that other takes of these tracks prove there was still strong songwriting and performing from the Bard during this era. One song that did not need rescuing is "Dark Eyes" a stone cold stunner from/for any decade; a lesser known great song from Dylan.

This is the first time RtBE have heard the husband and wife team of Nathan Salsburg & Joan Shelley. 

Thoughts on Cover:

The lightness of the cover pulls some of the sting out of the original as the duo breeze through the effort without really digging in. It is an interesting choice as the haunting lyrics take on a more playful vibe which is a touch odd at first but flows along.

The New Orleans based post punk outfit Malevitus have a new single/video out for "Sinister".

RtBE reviewed the bands debut in 2019 and urge you to check out their stuff.

The NYC based artist Buzzane has released her third single and artistic accompanying video for the song "Monster". 

From her bio: 

Having grown up listening to R&B and Soul music, the US-based singer/songwriter and producer has honed her craft over the years to become the artist that she is today. Although she receives inspiration from several styles such as R&B, Hip-Hop, Soul, and Pop, Buzzane combines various compositional elements to form her unique and authentic sound.

Album Review: GA-20 - Crackdown

The third studio album from the Boston, MA based blues trio GA-20, titled Crackdown on Colemine Records, recalls a bunch of retro sounds as the band dips in and out of traditional blues styles. 

In the vein of The Black Keys, the group, Matthew Stubbs: guitar, Pat Faherty: vocals, guitar, Tim Carman: drums, use their two guitar, no bass, riffing to power through electro rocking blues with modern precision and throwback style. 

The groovy electro opener buzzes to set the tone as "Fairweather Friend" uses "oh-oh's" and corresponding riffs to punch out the kicked up style, before switching musical inspirations to bookend the album with a haunting acoustic based version of the same song that drips with despair; a neat trick. The weepy "Dry Run" has a touch of Hill Country blues in the vein of The North Mississippi All-Stars and slow rolling "Easy On The Eyes" flashes great guitar tones. 

Some of the brief efforts are pleasant but instantly forgettable ("Double Gettin'") but the groups foray into the Freddie King like roadhouse instrumental title track is a winner as is the '50's inspired sweet soda jerk sounding "Just Because". The thumping/vibrating "I Let Someone In", the quick swinging "By My Lonesome" and the heavy drumming of "Gone For Good" are all solid retro blues offerings if far from life changing.     

GA-20 are traditionalists and Crackdown is a clear love letter to an era of electric blues from the past, but quite a few bands are dabbling in this style these days. The trio does all of the attempted styles, tones and "been done wrong" lyrical feelings justice over the ten short, solid outings on this release.

The non-profit Noise For Now has curated a group of artists to create a compilation of brand new songs that will be released for one day only, tomorrow October 7th, 2022, on bandcamp. 

A host of RtBE favorites are included on this release and it supports a worthy cause.  The album cover was crafted by Kim Gordon and you can see it here:

New Single from Glytsh "SAV@GE" Out Now

The London based duo Glytsh (Hella Sin (Claire Genoud) and Luna Blake (Jennifer Diehl)) released a new single titled "SAV@GE".

The track is a mix of pop, noiserock and nu metal in the vein of fellow London act the Nova Twins.  It is interesting to hear this type of music come back into favor among artists twenty plus years after first appearing, and for it to be played by strong women adds a more unique dimension to the sound and songs.

The London based artist Shygirl has released a new single with an accompanying video for "Shlut". The video was directed by Diana Kunst, produced by Object & Animal, and shot in Sweden.

RIP Loretta Lynn

Loretta Lynn passed away today.  The legendary country music star was 90. 

RtBE reviewed a few of her late career albums and always dug her greatly, even ranking Full Circle in our top ten of 2016.

It is of Titus Andronicus' newest release The Will To Live. 

RtBE has always enjoyed checking out whatever Patrick and company are releasing, or live when we can catch them. RtBE has reviewed all of their releases since The Monitor, which still remains our favorite and one of our favorite albums of the past decade. 

The Will To Live is already our second favorite though as the band just put the pedal down in their search for "Ultimate Rock".

New Neil Young and Crazy Horse Album, World Record, Out in November

Neil Young and Crazy Horse are back with a new album World Record, coming in November. 

The group has been pretty prolific in recent years releasing Barn in 2021 and Colorado in 2019, both taken from the same recording sessions, not to mention Toast released this year and recorded in 2001 but never released.

 

While RtBE were not fans of those outings, NY&CH are one of our all-time favorites and we wrote about them extensively in our Masters series. It is always exciting to hear any new music from the band. 

This album comes from a new recording session, captured by Rick Rubin at his Malibu recording studio Shangri-La. The first single has been released and it is called "Love Earth", check it out below:
